Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

Oh yeah, I saw the original too. I believe it was a deliberate attempt to build a modern version of that classic. 🙂
Agree. It's so obvious, it has to be deliberate. And to my mind, that doesn't detract from either.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness."

- Oscar Wilde.

I saw this the other day, I didn’t remember BSA making a 350.
The last dying gasp of BSA, a prototype, fully developed and ready to go to production before their financial collapse ended it all. The only known prototypes are now in museums.

Apparently there is (or was) one being raced in Australia.
When the guy who owns it bought the bike, there was no gearbox within.
He had to get one made.

If you look at this bike from a production engineering point of view, it actually cost more to manufacture than a Bonneville.
When you cut through all the urban myths and bullshit, I believe the real reason that it was strangled at birth was that BSA-Triumph just couldn't produce a modern motorcycle at a competitive price

That’s very interesting. It really did look like a very well designed bike. It’s a shame the bottom fell out, Triumph / BSA we’re just beginning to make some competitive bikes ( again ).
If you know what I mean! 😉

Very quick for a two valve per cylinder 350 twin apparently.
Significantly more powerful than it’s obvious main rival the Honda CB350.
I believe that Honda were selling their 350 twin for $799 in the US at that time.
Projected retail price for the BSA would have been something like $1499.
Who the hell would have bought one ?

It seems that it never ever occurred to the BSA group senior management that they should maybe have established a manufacturing facility somewhere with lower costs (like India ?)
Instead of that they bought a stately home in the English countryside, and staffed it with 350 graduate engineers.
Fat lot of good that did

Thanks for the link Bob. No idea about this prototype bike.
