Anyone knows anything about Jawa

The brand was well known here in Northern Europe and I believe used in speedway
Dont think it is AI
350 cc largest ?

My dad had one (Jawa) when I was about 9 years old, a 250cc two stroke I believe. He the had a CZ 250cc Stroker as cheap simple transport to get back and for to work. Aparently simple bikes to work on; and you never forget the two stroke smell. He later got a Honda CB250 which was a much nicer and more modern machine.

Overall had good reputation back then.
As did Czechoslovakian engineering had

Come to think of it the 2 strokes Jawa had a very distinctive sound.

Giving throttle
Prrrr rrrrrr rrrrr tt

And letting go
Pang Bang Bang pang Bang

blue smoke
Army Used them
Sold off as surplus can see them now and then

I love those XT's, and the SR500's. I played around with one of those e-starts about 6 years ago then removed it. They're driven by a wheel that bolts on the lh end of the crank and locks into the rotor. Too much stress on a crankshaft that's not designed to operate this way. I can start my XT/SR's by hand using the kicker on the centrestand. It's simply a matter of getting piston/valve timing correct and pushing the kicker all the way through. Technique vs laziness.
That said, he has done a beautiful job preparing this bike.

I have only ever owned two single cylinder bikes, both Yamaha 2-strokes (DT250 & DT400).

I am thinking - once the two current projects are mostly complete (they're never completely finished, I guess) - about finding a dual sport big single and morphing it into a mostly street -oriented build.

Was thinking Suzuki DR-650. Lots to recommend it: hasn't changed much in 30 years, reliable, 4-valve, lots of parts, lots of aftermarket, etc.

Anyone have any experience with this bike? Thanks in advance!

I rode one of those off road LA to Vegas. Was just tractor going up hills! Wasn’t fun picking it up when I crashed (first time in deep sand so happened a lot :) but did everything asked of it!!! I have a friend with a DRZ400SM and it appears to be super fun as well.

Many thanks for that. I looked at the DR-Z400 but like the 650 better bc it's air-cooled v. liquid, it's bigger/torquier and has a deep aftermarket since it's been around "forever".
