One of those challenged in height was worried the seat was gonna be too high in this build.

Considering what a new bike costs now.... and that's a new bike that will give lots of fun with no worries about modern overcomplicated systems leaving you high and dry.
It's still a bit much for me, but I did like those and if I had the loose change...

I think that the XT500 looks a lot of money but I have seen rough ones priced at half of that. To get it back to as new condition would cost the same again even if you could find ultra rare new parts (you can't). So, whilst it seems a lot of money, I can see why someone would pay 11 grand for a brand new XT500. Sadly, it's likely to end up in a collection gathering dust rather than being ridden. A shame really.

I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, if you would want a pristine, as-new example of old school cool, this is a great opportunity. As IBALT points out, this would be difficult (and expensive) to recreate. You would likely only buy it for the cache or for what it means to you personally, as there are less expensive, more/as capable contemporary examples that could suffice e.g. DR-650.

But it will likely never be "worth" more than when it is purchased. Of course, for most of us, that presents no problem, as - for the most part anyway - we all have much more money invested in most of our bikes than they are "worth". I consistently do this with my eyes open and it doesn't bother me in the least.

All that being said, I think if I was going to drop a large chunk of change in one shot, I might aim for a more consistently valuable bike that appeals to a broader audience i.e. ELR, Z1-R, CBX, et al. Maybe...
