A friend has that very AMF Sportster. He went through it a couple years ago and offers it to me for unreasonable $.

Not the Sporters so much here -- but the larger ones the asking prices makes one wonder if a hearing aid is need
been looking at ca 3
5.5 k with gear shift problem --- 7 k one had a fire in the harness and an oil spill under visible from 30 meters
as if a hole in the bottom
one in shape 14 k
The AMF are known for quality problems

I rebuilt a totaled 79 Sportster Roadster in1980, straightened forks replaced top and bottom tree front tier and generator. Had about $1800. in it, rode it for two or three years and sold it to a friend who kept it for the next thirty years and sold it to his nephew. Great bike. The Sportster being discussed looks to be pre 79 and frame and rear shock placement are more pre AMF design. It took AMF ten years to change that. I've always thought the older Sportsters of Harley or AMF were more dependable than the big bikes.. My two cents

I believe they went to plastic guages on the SPORTSTER AROUND the 1975 model year INSTEAD OF THOSE beautiful polished behind the bars jobs. if memory still works. As for the massive oil spill .they were a dry sump engine . quite a few were know to leak the oil tank contents into the crankcases and
then gradually out on the floor while sitting or stored for a long time. Have a friend with a stock 1973 XLCH in his garage. not tun in 25 yrs. It looks like a
2 wheeled rendition of the Exxon Valdeze spill.
