^^^ I don't think the speedo drive is quite rugged enough...
Is that the oval piston motor that Honda was racing with for a while? I seem to recall that it was plagued with problems.
Here we go, they also had problems with making oval shaped rings seal properly, which is what I remembered.

Stumbled across a couple old photos I had. Me with my ‘77 BMW R100/7 and my ‘76 Triumph T140V. And ( 2 really faded and discolored ) photos of my ‘78 XS750 with a Windjammer Quicksilver fairing ( the first year Windjammer sold their small, frame mounted fairing )

I’m trying to fit the T140 handlebars on my XS650SH. The straight ends are a bit short for the XS650 bits. The XS switchgear must be a lot bigger than Triumph switchgear.
Yeah, I think you’re right about that.
There is narrower switchgear available, some surprisingly affordable. I ran into the same dillemma that was addressed in my "New to me XS 650" thread. I will look them up when I get a minute.
To the "Not XS650" end I found this fascinating 10 min video. I think it is well done and the host adds a touch of humor to a very good historical presentation.
Unfailingly entertaining and informative.
