I see the Chinese have copied my design and its for sale on ebay a hair cheaper. Go figure. They even copied my item description. It looks just like mine...if you threw it in a fire, drug it down a gravel road, and painted it with sewage.

Watch for an old die grinder, plan on new bearings if you want cheap. I go through dremels pretty regularly sharpening chainsaws , DE is right the bearings in plastic housings are not very rigid and quickly get a lot worse.

This will easily duplicate the kind of (high) quality tooling that XS650 frame welding exhibits...

I did something similar using a HF electric die grinder.

I used a clamp collar from McMaster welded to a piece of 1/2" keystock and a hose clamp at the rear. Still light duty but does what little grinding I need.

That's the tapered shaft for checking rotor runout. Nothing to do with the tool post grinder...

Iirc, Mustang owner said the rebuilt gen was about 4 big ones. Core charge was $500. So no, he didn't let me play with it.

Made a half assed one 'bout 10 yrs ago. Worked but it was finicky.
This one's a piece of cake to set up. Only "precision" required is being able to set the cross slide at 45°. That's within my wheelhouse... barely, but I managed.
For 30 bucks I'm plum tickled.

This is one of the valves out of the baby connie... the badly pitted one that's trashed. Cleaned up right nicely. Still pitted, still trash, but look at the 45° cut on that face... ya bunch o' naysayers.

That has the ring of Chinese tomfoolery. The Dremel I'm using (have several) is the one I used back in my R/C airplane days. Still in the Air Force... so 30+ yrs ago and still tight bearings. No wobble and no vibrations.

Perhaps the Chinese bearings in yours aren't the best quality?

Yep. Dremel only spins one direction, so you have to run the lathe in reverse.

Finally found a pic of my original (finicky) iteration. Pneu die grinder in a tube. Worked good enough to do the valves in my SG resto, but it weren't nothin' to write home about.

Thought so. I have this cheapo that uses a Horror Fright Bauer router motor. Don't recall where I got the holder. I used it for truing up the chuck on the old Seneca Falls lathe. Been sitting in the box since, but there if I find a need.
