Ok, I heard the infamous starter grind when firing up my engine for the first few times and pulled the clutch cover off to take a look. Found some bits of metal below the gear so took it off. As you can see from the pic, wear has started to happen. Looks like I caught it before complete disaster but want to get the experts opinion on if it's still ok once I do the spring mod or is it already toast?

Do the spring mod. Looks like that gear has a lots of life yet I've run worse for lot's of starts and miles.
Yes, that one still looks pretty good, hardly worn at all, and the attached rubber ring still looks very good too. Here's what a really bad one looks like .....
