So I had a running 76 before I put on a PMA and MikesXS ignition. Everything is wired correctly. The tank isn't on it and the exhaust isn't on it at all. When I go to turn it over with starter fluid I just get puffs of flame every so often from the exhaust ports and it doesn't even try to fire over. I am assuming timing??? I put the PMA on exactly as laid out in the description so there is no doubt it SHOULD have been put back together with TDC still in place. I marked the shit out of everything and double check over and over to make sure nothing moved when I put the PMA on it. The mikesXS though the instructions are pretty vague. Just clock it to the middle and rotate left or right to advance or retard. And insight on this would be helpful. Also, Just because I was wondering. After i get it running I am switching over to a capacitor and kick start. Where does the capacitor get its initial charge from or does it just not need one due to the PMA supplying voltage as soon as it starts turning?

A pic of the IGNITION/CHARGING side of the motor might help us unravel things.
You have a timing light?
remove both spark plugs determine TDC, mark it. ground the plugs or connect them to each other with bare wire.

The next would be easier with an electric start but a kick start and two people should do the job, kick and see where the timing is.
these should get you close (enough) to proper timing for it to run if everything else is OK.

YES a PM will self generate a capacitor enough to spark but it ain't gonna be as strong and consistent as a battery powered ignition for starting.

It still has the starter. I wanted to make sure it was running well before pulling the starter off it. What's the point of grounding the plugs out?

Plugs both have to be grounded or connected to each other to safely make sparks on a dual tower coil.
It's easier to get get a nice fast crank over to check timing if the plugs are out of the head.

Ok so when I check to make sure they are sparking and I have them pulled out they need to be grounded to each other. Gotcha.

TDC is right where it should be isn't it? The place has a good ground and the power is direct to battery. The yellow wire are secure and going to the reg/rec. The ignition wires are black to ground green to coil and the red to my kill switch then back to the othe side of the coil.
