Now THIS is really something. The range of things that could go wrong with this - but didn't - is quite wide and impressive.

NOTE: this is not an R/C model aircraft. It is a manned 35% scale replica of a Boeing B29 powered by four Honda Fit car engines.

...and here it is flying....

Two things are for sure:
  1. This guy has courage
  2. this guy has money

There is an authenticated - or so it says on that internet - case of a pilot landing a plane with just one wing. Israeli IDF jet pilot flying if I recall an F-15 suffered a mid air incident that ripped off nearly all of the starboard wing but he was able to fly the plane back to his home airbase and land. He knew the plane was damaged, had to struggle with poor control authority, asymmetric trim etc but was, eh, shocked would be an understatement, when he got out and saw the wing missing. The aerodynamic lift given by a wide & flat fuselage like the F-15 is said to be one of the factors in his favour.

Yes, that is indeed a true story.

Its a story of legend that's been repeated quite often out on the flightline when working on the F-15's. Those of us that maintained those jets had a great affection for them because they're such great aircraft. I worked em all...A's, B's, C's, D's and E's. 🥰

Remarkable film on the gizmo type B-61 (from 1970, but with great images and scenes...
(26 minutes) The old-timey gadget images especially.

Also remarkable
( Coster-Mullen the bomb guy)
the guy that ran the team that made the little bangers work at a millionth of a second
