You'n me both buddy.
I grew up loving to go to airshows. Followed an F-111 around the airshow circuit for a few years. Took our lightsport to Oshkosh and ran the booth for a few yrs. Even got to fly one in myself (talk about a rush). I've been to as many shows as anyone, I reckon.
Thoroughly fed up with 'em, I is... Mebbe I shoulda put this in the "rant" thread. :cautious:
Me too! I was ate up with it. I probably haven’t been in 30 years. I saw Bob Hoover perform at the last one I went to.

A P51 was lost at Vicksburg in the last two weeks. The P51 wasn’t designed for low altitude aerobatics. I think the pilot stalled a wing at low altitude.

We came extremely close to hitting one of those on approach to Porto Alegre (POA) in 2010. He was at 5000 ft on the approach path. I was crew on the 757. He could not have survived a closer miss by the right wing tip. Scary! The captain never saw him. The F/O sure did!

huh, just read the pilot's statement from that F-117 crash.
"Having completed the last of three scheduled flybys above the crowded air show in Maryland, I ascended into the blue sky, leveled out at 10,000 feet, and turned south toward Langley Air Force Base, Va."
I call total horse dookie. I was watching closely, I was fascinated with that craft at that time. He was doing a elevated-G pullup from a low level, over the main runway, approaching from the water in a NW direction. I watched the wing fold during that maneuver, saw him punchout, and watched the craft crash into a residential neighborhood.

A little more research, I found this; http://www.f-117a.com/793.html
This is a MUCH more accurate account of the incident.

MDANG. Joined during the 'Storm, immediately deployed for Desert Success, then rolled right into Bosnia (both at Aviano, Italy). Fun time in Aviano. Hung out with an Army SAR crew often at midnight chow. Got close to my Army crew wings ;). Quite a few low passes over beaches near Venice. Then some Naval aviator got himself shot down and stuck 'Behind Enemy Lines'... one of those crews had to go get him,.

Air Force, Navy, Marines??

Air America??
The flight to Aviano was interesting. Stopped in the Azores for fuel. Had to land at night. No lights other than runway markers. Trip from the aircraft to the terminal was in a bus with black painted windows. Between the aircraft and bus were yellow lines painted on the ground that lined up with the doors of both. We were told to look at the ground, stay between the lines, and do not look up until we were on the bus. Of course, this stupid 19yo immediately looked up and remarked "Hey, are those Specters?", seeing the silhouette in the minimal moonlight... That earned me a gentle prod with a rifle and a mild scolding.

That brings back memories

When I was stationed at Cannon AFB, we had an F-111 go down in Nevada with engine troubles. Loaded a crew of us with spares and tools and sent us on our way. Landed in Nevada, taxied to the ramp and were informed in no uncertain terms to "stay the fuck in our seats!!"
Same thing after that... armed dudes, eyes down... "don't even think about looking up!!" Into a hanger, fixed the jet, eyes down back into the bus, back to the Herc and back home. All very strange stuff for this 19-20 yr old kid.

Later found out we wuz at Area 51. Dreamland. Cool stuff!!

American Airlines Flight 191 was a regularly scheduled domestic passenger flight from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to Los Angeles International Airport. On the afternoon of May 25, 1979, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 operating this flight was taking off from then-existing runway 32R (the runway was subsequently demolished around 2015) at O'Hare International when its left engine detached from the wing, causing a loss of control. The aircraft crashed about 4,600 feet (1,400 m) from the end of runway 32R. All 271 occupants on board were killed on impact, along with two people on the ground. With a total of 273 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest aviation accident[a] to have occurred in the United States.

Is Welding aluminum something that is Used in Aeroplanes at all
For repairs
in the 70 ies and 80 ies I don't believe there was more than one place in Sweden in Stockholm
could do it
Aero svets and maybe one more Aerowelding
I know some Motorcycle magazine had an article about it .One man senior must be dead now.
It is not as difficult these days modern TIG equipment and frames are welded at Motorcycle factories

I have a hole, in a XS 650 Block outside the outgoing Axle seal .Not big but never the less a hole.
I have asked around have 3 names that is able to do it. or I can talk to

But rumor and internet says it is difficult because of the oil and dirt.
The engine besides the hole is good I believe .And it is a big job disassemble replace the block halves
( I have a spare )

If accepted in flying that have strict regulations it sends signals about how safe it is a method.
Welding steel, is problematic from a strength perspective. X Rays and other tests.needed
Pressure tests for Piping
