I believe it's the evolution of jets. The more efficient units on planes now are huge hi-bypass turbines. I think the early jets pushed all the compressed air through the combustion chamber(s)? Plenty of people who know this stuff around here - expect one of them will be along with a better answer in a mo.

I remember looking at an Airbus A380 we were about to board to fly Dubai-Melbourne - standing at ground level and looking up at those engines they looked as big as a house.

Yes, over 80% of the thrust comes from the fan.

The 747, DC10, and L1011 were early examples of high bypass engines. They have improved fuel economy and make less noise than what came before them.

Indeed, the difference is in the big fan at the front of the engine.

While it does limit the high speed performance of the aircraft somewhat, the gains in thrust and reduction in fuel consumption are enormous and have totally changed the performance of numerous aircraft that were developed in the 1950-60s (such as for example, the Boeing B52 bomber).

This large aircraft was originally powered by eight J57 turbojets which produced about 10,100 lbs of thrust each. Later variants that had eight TF33 turbofans, each producing 17,100 lbs of thrust while burning less fuel.

Hmmmm....let's see now: an increase in thrust of about 70% with lower fuel burn - what's wrong with that?

Sadly reported in the press this week; the Red Arrows are now down to 7 from nine aircraft. Internal disagreement between pilots and alleged marital affairs have soured the comradeship of this elite band of airman. Recruiting has been rushed to replace the displaced, so acrobatic manoeuvres in the air have been cut short. Unlike acrobatic manoeuvres in the bedroom......ahem!

BRISTOL BALLOON FESTIVAL

This annual event is a colourful spectacle.
All balloons take off from the Clifton Downs in Bristol.
Depending on the wind they fly over the Clifton Gorge and Clifton Suspension bridge; one of Brunel's greatest delights, opened in 1864.
Building started on the bridge in 1831.

"Speaking of record-setting, the giant established 110 of them in just three hours and 45 minutes. March 22, 1989 - Mriya takes off with 156.3 tons of cargo and puts its name in front of 110 world speed, altitude, and weight-to-altitude bests-in-the-world. " Link.

The AN-225 was within a dozen or so feet away from being the size of a football field. Yeah, roll that statement around on your lips for a few moments.... the size of a football field.

She didn't deserve the ending she got...
