I did a good bit of gravel today. Two of those bridges are what I set out to see. You can't find them without intent. The first one is the Black Bayou Bridge in Glendora, MS. Some say that's the bridge Emmett Till's body was dumped from. For more pictures and info, search Glendora, MS and Black Bayou Bridge'
The last one is the Lamb-Fish Bridge. It's a draw bridge. Google for more images. There was too much mud for me to get closer.

Mississippi Burning?

I did over 150 miles on my XS650SH today. There was a scheduled Blues Ride from Red’s BBQ & Blues in Coldwater to Ripley, MS for the Burnside Music Festival. I was the only one who showed up. Just two of us had an awesome ride along MS 4. We go through historic Holly Springs on the way. I had a great time in Ripley the short time I was able to stay. I talked to some of the locally famous blues artists. Unfortunately, on the return trip, we came upon fresh road kill. A motorcyclist apparently met a pickup truck head on. Straight road, no crossroad. I didn’t study the scene. I didn’t even want to look at it. So, several miles of gravel road had to be traversed to get around the mess.
Be careful out there folks!

A couple weeks back there was a fatal bike accident on a road I often ride. Pretty much a nice straight road in that area. Seems the guy on the motor cycle decided to pass a few cars not understanding that the car at the head of the line was making a left turn into his driveway. Cyclist T-boned the car and was killed. Driver of the car was more or less uninjured.

Nothing like coming upon a motorcycle fatality when you’re on a motorcycle.

It's sad to hear of so many motorcycle fatalities lately. I put many thoughts and prayers out into the universe for their families and all those affected. We never are more than a split second away from the same fate, recklessness or not.

Today I put 200+ miles on my ninja 650 and had two close calls of my own. A dump truck in the oncoming lane had a tire explode right next to me as it passed. I about shat myself but it was one of those moments where I realized "that could've been way worse"

Then within 5 minutes I hit and killed a squirrel at 75mph. It also could've ended worse. These moments are forcing me to slow down more and more. I still find my spots of traffic-free straights to get a lil rowdy... But for the most part I ride my ride.

The rest of the ride went very well. We went all over South Central PA and rode through historic Gettysburg. Such a cool spot just 40 minutes from me. A whole war was fought in my backyard... Lol.

We all took turns riding my ninja. My buddy and his wife wanted to see how she felt about being on the back of a sports bike (she likes it)

And my dad wanted to get a feel for it because he wants to take his license test on it. We all got home safe so it was a fantastic day. Such a beautiful sky.

Part of the reason I decided to walk away: I have serious trouble controlling my throttle hand. Reactions slowed by age, increasing traffic, the rise of distracted driving and speed are a deadly combination.

Somewhat oddly, I have little to no urge to drive fast in the Vette. Partly due to the increased sensation of speed when your derriere is that close to the pavement and partly because a red Corvette convertible is pretty much a neon sign saying "bust me" to the cops.

I’ve thought more about the scene I came upon yesterday. I pulled up the site on Google Maps. I ran that highway eastbound then westbound at 55 mph with another rider 10 or more seconds behind me. The pavement is new. The weather perfect. Visibility not bad, but the road has a lot of curves and elevation changes. At the pace I was going, I considered my ability to handle any threat would be easy enough. It could have been the truck initiating a left turn at a driveway in front of the bikes. Considering the sight distance, to make that deadly error one would have to be completely oblivious to their surroundings. The damage to the truck was extensive and focused on the left side indicating an encroachment of the centerline and collision at a high rate of speed. A texting driver? Another distraction by either driver? Someone is dead because of seemingly avoidable circumstances. Obviously, this is something I can’t put out of my head right now.

I think these things are supposed to stick with us for a little while. Unfortunately speed kills more motorcyclists than almost anything else out there. I say this knowing that I'm a reckless rider at times. I'm 27 years old. Going fast is still super fun and appealing to me at times. I've had my fair share of close calls. One almost exactly like this actually and it was definitely due to speed. Unfortunately some of us don't make it out to see and talk about it I'm lucky that I'm one of the few that does. Not saying that it was definitely the writer's fault, there are a number of things that could have possibly happened, however it's unlikely that speed WASNT a factor. Im sorry it's chewing on you so much man.
