Any thoughts before I eventually pull the side cover? I’m trying to test the compression. I have the bike in neutral and the kick start stops at the top of its motion. The motor is free, but the kick start won’t do a full motion.

Have you previously had the right side engine cover off before finding the kick-start issue? If so, it's probably not installed quite correctly. There's a procedure in the shop manual about it.
I tested cylinder compression on my 650 by cranking on the electric starter with both plugs out, throttles wide open. Very easy to do it that way.
