I have been redoing the top end on my XS650C. A couple of days ago I was nearing the point where I might have the new cam chain installed. I was replacing the right hand side cover when I noticed that the kick start was not working correctly. But I couldn't use it fully with no cam chain so I checked into it when that was complete this morning. It malfunctioned every way possible for my confusion. But it seems to be pretty consistent now in that it kicks through properly, but it has no spring return. It can be lifted by hand, however, and it worked that way for at least 10 strokes. I did absolutely no work on anything in the right cover other than the tach. Drive. So I'm confused. I know that I must have done something, like maybe when I tipped the whole engine over so that I could reach under it to brush the dirt from it. It was maybe only over about 30 degrees. But I can't think of anything else. A few pictures are below (I hope).
