Knives and other things

Years ago my youngest daughter (country girl) got busted for carrying a knife at high school.
I picked her up.
She said sometimes it’s good to have a knife to use. Ya, I agree.
I asked her where she got the knife ?
“Took it from moms husband” ..
well that’s not good. Told her to put it back.
Took her Ranch & Home and bought her a descent knife, didn’t talk about school
:sneaky:👍

I ALWAYS carried a knife in school. So did everyone else I knew. Lotsa' fistfights, but never a stabbing. It was in the mid 70's. Also lots of kids had .22's in their trucks and even a few with shotguns, never had a shooting either.

Yeah, a lot of the kids I grew up with had .22 rifles and shotguns. We went hunting with our Dads and brothers. I remember guys taking shotguns to school in their cars and then going bird hunting when school got out. Never gave it a thought back then.

If I go to work with a pocketknife today, I risk getting fired. These days, it’s almost as if you’re carrying a gun, not a tool.
At my last employer, they had a no weapons policy too thanks to the company lawyer. It was totally ignored and the company owner knew it. There were over 75 technicians there so at least 75 knives and half a dozen handguns that I knew about. Hell, I even bought four guns at work. Never an issue.

I have my father's Buck as well that I got when he passed. I will say I'll always have at least one Buck knife seeing as the company treated me so well when I sent that knife in to get worked on. My other knife that I carry is my ESEE 3. Made the mistake of carrying it with me at work once and since it's a rather large fixed blade, I was called Dundee for the longest time

My last job before retiring was teaching at AIM (Aviation Institute of Maintenance). I wore my Schrade on my belt every day I worked there (15yrs). On any given day just about every instructor did.
Retired in '16, so 8 yrs ago. Pretty sure if I drove down there today, that would still be the case.

Yes. I think mechanics should be able to have tools.

I remembered one knife I have kept
German Solingen which is a good brand --- I Believe it is intended for Scouting
Send signals of Bayonet style + have Leather holder.
Bought in a department store mid or late 60 ies by my Father given to me.

The upper chromed end is flat on the backside and has been used for hitting something small nails possibly
Has been resharpened And the blade is Black if i recall right for smearing out Permatex Gasket Cement.
In the 70 ies
Could have polished it ..
Not seen for sale in 50 years Don t believe it is possible to find.

Not seen much use otherwise.

Switchblades was and is not much used professionally Those with a spring activated mechanism was illegal if i recall right.

Today you are not allowed to carry a knife in public places if you cannot give an explanation for having it on you.
If you are working and need it or are going fishing or so.
But the law is mostly used when other crimes has happened as in drug related or fighting.
And the Police have other reasons to ask questions.

Looking for the knife I found things I have forgotten I have the one below I did know i had
The other thing is not Motorcycle related even though it looks as a gas handle for heavy handed riders
And it is not a hammer either .. Perhaps never seen in the USA

The other thing to the right is a thing where you put a pencil ( Or sharp hardened point ..don't know the English word ) and draw a line line parallel to an edge

I have that same Solingen can't find it. Got it in the 80s, Frankfurt area, did find this though.
Got it around the same time.

A friend of mine thought he was Jim Bowie threw it at a tree and busted the tip off, so I had to grind a new point.
I made a special sheath for it and used to carry it as a boot knife. Them days are long gone. ;)

On the subject of weapons vs. tools...

I've been armed any time I leave home pretty much constantly since Slick Willy was in office. Most of the time I make at least a pretense of concealing that fact, usually just an un-tucked shirt.

This Summer has been so hot and humid, I haven't even bothered with that. In fact, today I stopped at the grocery store for a few items with a .45 on one side and a spare mag on the other and nobody batted an eye. I see an occasional raised eyebrow or double take but have only been asked about it once that I can remember and that was a polite and reasonable conversation.

Here in Florida we have to conceal. I live on the line with Georgia which allows open carry, but even while in Ga., I still conceal. But ya' know what? That's why they make chocolate and vanilla. Stay safe, my friend.

Concealed is my preference, especially when it comes to you. It's not that big a deal, but if you're packing I prefer not to look at it. I remember having this conversation with friends over lunch and one of them pulls out a small 9 mm from his pocket and has it pointed at my crotch. "Hey Jim! DO YOU MIND!"

I MUCH prefer concealed myself. There's absolutely no advantage (and a couple of disadvantages...) to announcing that you're armed.

However, I don't do heat, so...

The .45 goes in a paddle holster that is VERY uncomfortable against the skin, so the un-tucked t-shirt doesn't work. With the various other repellent dispensers I carry, that's not a problem.

I make no bones about that and it's perfectly understandable. One day I was standing on the bank of a trout stream fishing. A man is walking toward me brandishing a handgun. We're in the Chattahoochee Nat'l Forest, so I didn't give it too much thought, other than WTF? Before getting within 50 ft of me he shouted that he was looking for deer he had just hit with his car. Walking up to a stranger with gun in hand could invite consequences. Had that been a Memphis parking garage...

I know, I'm sending this down a rabbit hole. What else do you have to do on a Sunday afternoon?

What a moron that guy was.

It's usually best to have a polite conversation when someone that has a 45 on them.
