Just adding my 02cents here. It can be done with the engine still in the bike, I just finished up. Did it pretty much as described above and it was fairly simple. In my case the bearings on one side of the motor were sounding gritty and making noise. As stated elsewhere the bearings are pretty robust and probably would have been fine as they where but the noise was driving me nuts.
Myself would probably try it motor in frame wood blocks lifting the rocker box and so
It is a lot of work getting the motor out also If nothing else is going to be serviced I would give it a try
If it gets to difficult can reevaluate later and pull the motor
