M Unit on a 1979 XS650 with TCI

Helping my brother build his wiring harness. I’m no expert but fairly ok with making things work.

Wiring the M Unit has me confused as how a TCI will get incorporated? Or where I wire the regulator/rec?

All other inputs are good, key, ignition, horn are good……starter is kinda questionable.


Any help?

Hey. So I have an m unit with tci. May I make a suggestion? Buy a chopper harness from tc bros. It’s around $35 and will make everything reversible and stupid easily. Literally 5 wires. Two go to ground, one to battery, the other two soldered together and connected to the ignition output.

Would you be able to provide more details about your wiring setup? Or is it as simple as the TCI and regulator plug into the harness from TC bros?

I will absolutely buy that harness from TC bros if this will make the M Unit work with the TCI.

In the TC bros website it mentions for “points” is that okay as I’m certain this has the Hall Effects.

It’s simple plug and play. Just need to order the correct harness for your bike (6 or 8 pin).

That’s the link for the 6 pin but there is an 8 pin option if your bike has that.

Can confirm it works perfectly on the m unit.

‘80/81 are six pin. ‘82/83 are eight pin.
