MEANINGFULL PROTECTION

Yeah. Approach to safety and safety gear is a choice and to each his own (except where legislation demands).

For me, I will always wear seatbelts, and when riding, a full-faced helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, et al. I think most statistics will indicate this is a safer approach.

Maybe a little bit analogous to the crappy car seats many of us were in when little (or not at all) versus the highly engineered and tested little capsules kids ride in today. No bumpy rides thru a strip mine in a crap car seat with a 22-250 propped in front of them!😳

People still die in car crashes every day. I don’t see reports on the news much anymore. When I was a kid, car accident fatalities were reported on the local news every evening. I was impacted by those losses as a child as well. Probably the number one reason I’m anxious to retire is the daily assault by aggressive drivers on every commute. I’m sick of it! Someone passed me on the shoulder last week. I was following traffic and about 5 mph over the speed limit.

That’s an interesting viewpoint Marty.

Car accidents and fatalities still happen, even though driver / passenger car safety has improved massively over the years. Fatalities are only press reported if it’s a celebrity or high profile person in the current spotlight. Ordinary people don't sell headline press numbers unfortunately.

As a daily driver in my twenties I had road rage against ignorant drivers cutting me up on my daily commute; to which I would react. At that time I did quite a bit of Rally competition events, so considered myself a competent driver; but intolerant of other aggressive road users.

In my Thirties I became a company representative doing 30 - 50k road miles a year. Within 1 month of that job my road rage dissolved to zero. Yes I still got annoyed with the aggressive assholes but I didn’t react to them anymore. Just go with the flow and get to your destination safely.

I am a police trained advance driver license holder with both car and motorcycle. I ride in a virtual safely bubble, using trained observational skills. It teaches you to avoid entering dangerous situations, and use experience skills to avoid potential disasters. Of course you cannot predict the kamikaze / suicide / drink-drug user smashing into stationary traffic; but at least I minimise my risk level.

I think MG cars used the motto ‘Safety Fast’ I agree with that.

Here's another form of protection I hadn't thought of....
