Metal in oil filter

Yes, but on a new-to-you bike, it's best you check the carb jetting sooner rather than later.

The smoking off the right pipe may be oil that has leaked from that big cover above it.

I have 150 lbs compression on both sides. Carbs were rebuilt by me but somebody had already bumped up the jets. Currently the carbs have 137.5 mains 135 air jets and 45 pilot jets. Mix screws turned out 3-3.5 turns. I adjusted the cam tensioner then the valve clearance but I believe I used book settings. Read somewhere that those book settings may cause rattle. Haven't gotten around to putting timing light on it yet. That was all done before the videos I posted. I think I'll go back and check the tensioner again followed by valve clearance. Anybody have recommendations?

Your carb jetting sounds good, you're not over-jetted. With the larger mains and pilots, you may not need the mix screws set so far open (rich). 1/2 to 1 turn less (about 2.5) may work better. Have you verified float settings are correct? Too much fuel in the bowl can cause rich running.

If you still have the factory ignition, you can check the timing but there is no adjustment for it.

Not as bad as I was expecting. Thought I'd see metal savings all over this filter based on my original post. Guess they're collecting on those 2 magnets. Filter does have a tear on the one end but was expecting this based on all of the other posts on the subject that I've read about on the site. What's my path forward?

I'll scrub it real good with a cleaning solvent. After it's dry and just before patching I'll use acetone or lacquer thinner and give it a good wipe.

I thought I saw a thread where someone was using a KTM filter similar to this one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Reusable-S...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

Not sure what is involved, but probably more than I'm capable of. Seems like a sturdy filter element but not sure what's needed to convert.

Running a Smedspeed filter conversion on my XS - have a look here: https://www.xs650.com/threads/miss-november-xs2-tribute.55057/post-598561

Removed the sump and filter, sent the sump to Smedspeed and received an exchange one with the plumbing for a spin-on external filter. A few people have had difficulty getting in touch with Enrico Forte who runs Smedspeed now but there may be other, similar conversions on the market? Google is your friend . . .

It's a very easy conversion, you have an easily replaceable filter with a much finer mesh and don't need the side filter. The only downside is an oil & filter change is a bit messier as oil comes out all around the filter housing.
