Metallic tapping rattle...!

Hi all

This is my first classic bike. It has been off the road after a 24 year layup.

I really love it.

33k. 79 Se Special and she lives in the UK. I have done a lot to the bike, but all I had to do to (so far!) the engine was an oil change, set the valves and the chain tensioner.

The engine pulls and runs pretty damn good in my eyes. But there is metallic rattle noise at about 800-900 rpm and it goes away above that.

Not 100% sure that the valves are set right tho? Listen to the the video if you can. I am open to help from those who know far more than I do about these things.

If everything is adjusted correctly, set the tick over to 1000/1100rpm and the problem isn't a problem any more

A valve set too loose will cause the kind of noise you describe. A cam chain guide with disbonded plastic will make that kind of noise.

Adjust the valves and the chain and report back.
