I get upset about the taxes I pay and I think they’re extreme and extremely unfair. VAT or whatever that is, would probably tax me out of this hobby. I guess I should leave it there. Yeah, rewind the rotor.

Two adventures with he Orange Peril yesterday.
Rode down to Wooler to meet Elliot for tea and a teacake. He came on his 1972 R75/5.
It's a thing we do time to time. I think it gives Elliot the incentive to get out on his bike? Hour and a half of tea and chit-chat, then we were off home again.

A few miles into the ride home, came round a bend and found the straight before Midfield full of stopped traffic, must have been a mile of it, as I started to filter past the queue, a van driver open his door and said 'The roads been shut, you'll not get through!'
Did a u-turn, two or three miles back towards Wooler, turned off towards Kirk Yetholm. After a mile or two, sudden massive impact, felt something break, felt the engine stop, coasted to a halt. We had hit a road imperfection - not a pothole but like the road had sunk and the far edge was like a nearly vertical 4". Fucking hell!
Got to run now, tell you the rest of the story tomorrow . . .

I'd contact the local authorities about that not only for your own sake ( damages and injury to yourself ) but that sounds like a bad enough situation even for a car to hit let alone another bike

Had to dash off last night. Now where were we?
Broken down in the middle of nowhere. But at least it was a sunny afternoon, not stuck on a busy main road at night in the rain.
Spent some time looking for anything obvious that might have shut the engine down. We wuz at a remote group of cottages and the folk were very helpful. They knew about the road and have told the Council - local solution is drive past the fault on the wrong side of the road.
I said 'Can I leave the bike on your land, I'll hitch home and come back with a van, might not be till tomorrow?'
They said, 'Do you have a breakdown service?' Yes I do, but I never even think of using it . . .
The insurers were called, the AA was despatched and without going into all the ins and outs - for example, Richard the AA man and I had to make a hundred mile round trip to get the right sort of bike trailer - eventually Miss November suffered the considerable indignity of coming home seven hours late towed behind a van.
Yesterday (Tuesday) mostly spent going over the bike, fixing problems. The detective work took a while. It seems that when we hit the road imperfection, the massive wallop the seat gave me broke the fuse box. Must be what I felt break and pretty obvious to see. All four fuses looked fine, checked at the scene by me and Richard. But one fuse has been damaged internally and still gives brief continuity if you wiggle the right wires. Hard to find and not something I've seen before.
New fuse box ordered. With a new fuse temporarily wired in the engine starts and runs. The other fault I found was rear and brake lights not working - the earth wire to the tail had been ripped out.
The forks and rear shocks appear to be fine but I'll be keeping an eye on them.
I'll write to Northumberland roads dept stressing that this is a road safety issue - I could have lost control of the bike with much worse consequences - but I don't expect much response.

Weather mild for late October and heavy rain since the salt was spread has cleaned the roads. Decided to go and see Elliot. A nice 110 mile round trip which might be Miss November's last longish run this year?
The bike performed well and made it home mostly in one piece.
On a more positive note, passed another milestone today.

That will remain forever unknown, no idea where it fell off in run from Elliot's to Kelso - stopped to buy Cypress potatoes - which would be about 45 miles. Ten of those on the A1 trunk road dual carriageway.
Might still have the original rectangular light, might be able to find another XS2 one, no rush, Missy looking about grounded for now.

First, 20-30 kicks with ignition OFF - hope to move some oil around. Then Ignition and choke on - signs of life with the first kick, two or three more and the engine caught properly. Choke off but kept a few revs until she was ready to idle without attention.
Still lots to do - devise some sort of rear light, better brackets to hang the silencers, general clean and tidy, clean and lube the chain and, well, you know, back to the routine.
But oh, that felt and sounded good after the winter hiatus.

Our weather this week will be a mixture of sun and rain/snow, but still too cold for enjoyable biking.
NEXT week is supposed to be very nice - up to 10C (about 50 deg. F) but, alas, I will be in a courtroom the entire week (as a witness, not as a defendant, I might add).

Last time out for Missy was indeed 26th October.
Today, finally found the time, motivation and parts to replace the XS2 rear light. This rear lamp doesn't have the internal reflector so it looks a bit dim. Might be able to jury rig sumfin but not a huge worry as the bike is MOT exempt. Took a lot of messing about and a new 3-wire harness to run under the mudguard.
But with the bike now road legal once again, had to go for a road test, didn't I?
Wish I could get that l/h turn signal to sit straight. Wonky makes the bike look . . . a bit neglected.
