Motorcycle Racing Then & Now

Is there anything more unique than motorcycle ice racing? I had a friend that used to do it in Michigan.
big honkin spikes, crazy lean angles, and don’t fall and get run over! :yikes:

I have always loved Salt flat racing. 😃

You can see Don Vescos double XS650 engine Yamaha streamliner here,

And if you’ve never seen the movie “Worlds Fastest Indian” do yourself a favor and find it. It was an inspiring story about Burt Monroe’s life long passion and his garage built streamliner.

Not motorcycles but I was absolutely intrigued by the early jet powered streamliners and their constant setting of new land world speed records. I wrote a little article about it, here,

Wow this thread keeps getting better. Thanks for sharing all of this cool stuff guys! Just watched that Paul Brodie Excelsior video. Amazing vision. I'll be watching more of his videos. He is somewhat local to me and one of my buddies in Vancouver area has mentioned him before I think.

Every "World Speed Record" is a story of perseverance and dedication. Many against impossible odds. While this is motorcycle site, please bear with me, Vestas Sail Rocket, the fastest "sailboat" and the fastest power boat. Please note that these seem to not be "high bucks" efforts but impassioned amatuers. The aussy Ken Warby would qualify as a true pioneering hero (unless I missed a seedier side).

Halfmile - I live in South Australia and used to go to Lake Gairdner for Speed Week here in Aus. The streamliner (in your first picture) came to Lake Gairdner one year - I think it had twin Hyabusa motors - It was run by a crew called Ack- Attack - it had lots of problems at that meeting. That year a belly tank ran 300 MPH - even from a distance that looks fast. One of the first things that struck me about the salt lake was how hard it is - to put your tarp down (compulsory under every vehicle to preserve the condition of the lake incase of any leak from the vehicle) you have to use a 18volt drill and long self drilling tek screws. Another story - one year I saw a heap of about 10 blokes all fighting to untangle a mountain of wire - somebody had tangled up the timing wire - I cant remember but I think it was the 3 mile of wire thats used for the "timed" section - they were still doing it the next day.
Regards Ray.
