Have these very loud shorty's on stock OE headpipes. Not sure of brand or source. There was no packing in the 10" baffles, so wrapped some fiberglass in there, and they're still too obnoxious. Not much difference between open headers.
(73 all stock with BS32s)
Anyone have any suggestions as to an aftermarket pipe that's quiet enough but still "sporty" sounding?
I kind of have Commando envy, so I like the upturned Dunstall look. But if the price is right...I can like anything. Thanks/Dave_a

I like the Commando style mufflers too. What options are out there though in that style, I haven't looked.

In my opinion, about the nicest muffler available for these bikes at the moment is what's called the "Commando" muffler. It sounds great (slightly louder than stock, but not too loud), performs well, and looks good .....

It was supposedly developed on a dyno by Heiden Tuning. Don't buy them from MikesXS, they're not the real deal. They are selling an EMGO copy. It looks the same on the outside but doesn't have the same "guts". It has the baffling from one of their other mufflers. As far as I know, YamahaXS650.com is about the only place to get the originals now, but don't get the ones Wingedwheel linked to. They need adapters to fit the 1.5" headpipes and those things always leak. Instead, get the ones with the 1.5" I.D. inlet, they'll fit without adapters. Yes, they cost more, but they're the ones you want .....

I'm not sure why they call them the "Commando", they really don't resemble an actual Norton Commando "Peashooter" muffler very much. I know because I have a set of those on one of my 650's. They're a beautiful muffler but basically straight through and very loud, lol. I added baffles to quiet them down some ......

Winged,
Why did you choose yours over the $99 Commando version? I'm not sure I understand the difference between the versions other than $30
other Commando version
OE headpipes on your bike?
Is there a re-packable baffle?
TIA

The difference is in the I.D. of the mounting inlet. The $99 muffler I linked you to has a 1.5" inlet and fits on the headpipe perfectly without the need for reducers. The cheaper version has a 1 3/4" inlet and requires reducers to fit the stock 1.5" O.D. headpipe, and like I said, those things are a pain in the ass and always leak.

The two versions used to be the same price but they recently raised the price on the 1.5" inlet ones. I'm thinking that's because they are more desirable.

Baffles to repack?
I suppose (if no) they get noisier over time? Any thoughts?
(I don't mind repacking}
As soon as I posted this, an older post popped up where you suggested new larger ID head pipes for better performance?
Worth the extra $ on a stock bike?

I actually posted the wrong link. I have the 1.5 inlet that 5T posted. I bought them specifically for that reason. I’ll have to go back and look at what I paid.

I'm running the commandos with the 1.5" ID on a set of aftermarket single wall headers, provenance unknown. These muffs came with "plugs" that will quiet them down if desired. I like them open. Not obnoxious at all and no packing. These are the long ones 27 +", not the shorties.

If I get 1.5" head pipes & matching "Commandos" what performance gain for $400+/- over commandos & OEM head pipes?
Are there other combos I should be looking at? Delkovic has a 2-1 for example.
Any experience out there with medium diameter head pipes?

For normal riding the OEM head pipes are fine. Larger head pipes can cause loss of torque at lower RPMs.
I ran the Delkovic 2-1 for a couple of years. It has1.75 headers. I had to add inserts in them to make the motor think they were 1.5 to get it to run it's best. Got tired of the sound so I went to stock head pipes with the 1.5 Commando's. Very happy with that set up.

One last maybe dumb question. On those shorty mufflers the rear brake pedal bottoms out on the pipe. Limiting is travel
Any issue like that with these Commando pipes? TIA
