Hey guys!

New here! Just picked up this '81 bute. Plan is a full rebuild, possible brat or tracker. Low compression now, but nothing a big bore and picking your brains won't fix! Much more to come! Till then, Cheers! And ride safe!

Scored another '81 motor, also low compression . Whatever, I'll take it. Gonna try my hand at a rebuild this summer and leave the bike intact till winter. I'm sure I'll have questions once I crack this thing open!

Holy crap guys! Just found another oneo_O. Saw it come up for sale this morning on the ol interweb and pounced. She's a 79 special I believe. 13k on the tac and seems to have compression, got high hopes for this engine. Think I have enough to keep me busy for awhile now....at least that's what the wife says, lol!

Not sure if this is the correct place to keep posting about these bikes? BUT, pulled the plugs on the 80' to check compression and immediately noticed a significantly larger plug hole in the head??? Does this plug look like it's got a helicoil wrapped around it to you guys?? Just want to get a good compression test done to determine the better bike to build here. Do the 80 heads take a larger diameter plug than the 81'? Thanks in advance!

Looks like a "time-sert" brand thread repair collar on the plug from the pic. Plus threads are the same @ 14mm X 1.25. Will it thread off the plug?

Ya, I bet I can work it off the plug thread. Thanks for confirming.

Hey guys got new thread-serts installed, leaked a tad but held enough compression to get a decent reading. Thanks again for the help!

Anytime....

Good thing about Time-serts is they're solid (vs heli-coil); you can use hi-temp Loctite red on 'em in the future. Also, good idea to put a little anti-seize on sparkplug threads.

So, been busy getting the 81 legal and safe for the summer. Just too fun to ride to rip apart while the weather is still good. Fitted the exhaust from the 80, as well as a speedo swap, fluid, filter, and strainer changed. Also found a duct tape free old seat for cheap in the classifieds here. Swapped the front wheels simply for a better tire that was on the 80. Fitted pod filters, and the stock bars off my Indian Scout, with new switches and battery which got almost all the electrics working minus the headlamp (still figuring that). Runs pretty well actually!
