Now for the bad news! Haha. Was out ripping around having a blast test riding before I start trusting it to get back and forth to work. Anyways, I round a corner, give it some throttle, up around 40mph. Then, hear a loud bang and the rear wheel locks up....like REALLY locked up! I skid to stop, thankful I wasn't in the previous corner when it happened. Drag the bike with a locked up wheel off the road and start my assessment of what just soiled my pants. The rear drum was stuck engaged, the engine couldn't budge it, had to call the wife to bring me a hammer, a few taps on the actuator lever at the drum finally freed it up, but she's making as gawd awful squeal back there now. It'll be interesting to see what failed when I get some more shop time. Sorry for the long story but nobody else seems to care about my old bike other you fellas! Hahah, cheers!

Holy crap guys! Just found another oneo_O. Saw it come up for sale this morning on the ol interweb and pounced. She's a 79 special I believe. 13k on the tac and seems to have compression, got high hopes for this engine. Think I have enough to keep me busy for awhile now....at least that's what the wife says, lol!
So yer just dipping a toe in the water then? Welcome to the forum - as you already know this is the best place for XS650 advice, chat, etc.

Sorry, been on a week long ride through Idaho on the Indian😉. Then work punished me for taking vacation, haha. Finally got back in the shop to investigate the rear wheel lock up...pretty self explanatory judging from the picture. Sheared drum! Probably from the friction material seperating long ago....looks like a simple swap and I'll be back on the road though.

Thought I'd do wheel bearings, chain, sprocket, etc., While I'm in there.... anyone here ever press the rear "top-hat" bushing into the bearing, then proceed to install it upside down in the wheel? this guy did! Figured it out immediately with the loose spacer inside the wheel and it wouldn't fit between the swingarm. Pounded out and re-ordered...hahah, live and learn.

allright! New tires, wheel bearings, sprocket, chain, rear and front brake pads, front lines now braided and bled (done after this pic). Just gotta sort the headlight/dash lights not working and I'm riding this gem to work soon!

Wow....they sure made these harnesses far more complicated than they needed to be... Got the old inline fuses swapped out, still trying to sort the headlight, and throw some LEDs at it while I'm here.

Yep for a simple twin motor they made the harness way too complex with relays and safety stuff.
I tried sorting my custom built machine; the previous owner had hacked about the harness. In the end gave up and stripped out the lot. All of it.
Salvaged the ignition side of things and have almost completed a full rewire from scratch using a Moto Gadget M-Unit.
Hoping to fire her up tomorrow.......🙏🤞🙏

Ya man, totally get it! This is an unreal amount of unnecessary wiring. I have an m-unit on the shelf for when the bike gets it's full build this winter. Just trying to get various lights going in the meantime.

Looking good Peepz; how did she run?
She's running fairly well! Really liked the cool morning air! Master cylinder needs to be replaced but still works well enough. (On order). I have a slight slipping out of gear problem that needs to be fixed( happened twice on the 20mile ride). All and all though, pretty solid!

I can't express how much of a help this forum has been. Nearly answered all of my questions with a simple search!
Yep, it's a great resource for all of us on the XS650 (and other machines). And most members are patient with the less skilled (Me!) and extremely knowledgeable.
