Hello!

I’ve been reading these forums alot in the past months while waiting on the estate going trough bunch of red tape. But finally, today is the day I became a proud owner of a ’77 XS650!

I found the bike some time ago in a back of a shed at my extended familys old farm, where it’s been sitting for probably 20 something years so I got my work cut out for me. Engine is free but overall the bike is in a rather rough shape.

As for me, my forties are coming faster than I tought. I ain’t no mechanic but I am not a stranger to wrench either. I’ve had a bunch of bikes in the past, all from the 80’s and early 90’s. My current daily rider is ’88 XJ900, that used to belong to same owner the XS did.

I’ve wanted to have and old school chopper pretty much since I was a kid (Damn you, Easy Rider!), and as restoring the XS would be a steep hill to climb, I decided to go for the chop.

But first things first, I gotta get the bike running. Took the carbs out for cleaning. Slide on the left carb is stuck, but fingers crossed ill get it loose. Changing the oil while the carbs soak in a cleaner, fixing a temp tank, checking the ignition and checking the pressures up next!

Long term plan is TC bros hardtail, 6 over forks for the frisco style. Most likely going to get the vape PMA setup, rephase seems cool but probably not going to go that route. 5th gear overdrive most likely when I have a reason to open the engine.

Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself as I’ll probably be asking bunch of questions down the road. Was too exited to take pics but managed to snap couple.

Hi, @laakkeet, welcome to the forum. I think you are being very sensible to get the bike running before you chop it - doing it the other way round leads to classified adverts 'project for sale' or more likely the bike just being abandoned again . . .

It sounds like you have a plan and enough experience. If you can maintain your commitment you will end up with your old skool chopper and there are plenty of people here who will offer advice and help. My first piece of advice is go over the electrics - most unreliability with older bikes is electrical. Good luck with the project, keep us entertained and put plenty pictures. Cheers, Raymond

Honestly, I don't think it looks that bad. Clean it all up and I think you'll be surprised at how good it looks. Remove and paint the battery box, and clean/inspect all the wiring and connections, and I think you'll be good to go. The '77 Standard is a very desirable model. One of the Special models is more desirable for chopping up.

I'm glad someone said that. Looking at it, I think it would be a simpler job to bring it back to life as a standard XS650. It's not a lot different to the bike I have been working on for the last 9 months. Very similar in fact.

It's not my bike, so it's nothing to do with me. But I think in a world where there's thousands of these already chopped up (badly and in need of rebuilding), it's a real shame to chop that one up. It wouldn't be too difficult to make that a decent survivor.

There is indeed a XS650 club in Finland, but from what I saw the forums were pretty inactive.

As for the chop or restore, I understand the sentiment to restore instead of chopping the bike up. Being on a forum specialized on these machines, I figured that chopping ain’t the most popular choise.

The bike aint too far gone, thats true. However, the tank is rusted trough and inside is the worst I’ve ever seen. Fenders are cracked, tires a dry rotted as to be expected, side covers were kinda glued in place etc.

All in all, I’ve had few months to consider my plans for the bike. I was originally looking to do a cafe inspired restoration, but in the end what ever direction I go, it will require whole lot of elbow grease and long nights at the garage to get this bike back on the road. And to actually finish this project, I kinda have to have my heart in this.

The way I look at it, it’s better to have it back on the road as one of the thousand chops (well done and properly rebuilt) than abandoned survivor project.

Anyhow, back to the bike! I guess this thread will do as my build thread.

I cleaned the carbs yesterday and oh boy they were dirty. Going to need new floats and a rebuild kit down the line but for now it’s fine. One of the floats kept pushing the goo out from one spot but there was no visible hole, could try to solder it for now, as I probably need to rejet after exhaust is done and UNI filters are in place, so might aswel do the proper rebuild then.

Drained the oil and it was suspiciously good looking. Going to check the sump filter next. I am going to order a new sump filter from Heiden and getting the oil ”cooler” too, just so I can use the honda filters. Oem filters are pain to find up here.

Back to the garage!

Laakkeet, it's your bike so your choice. On this forum, there's original survivors, restored bikes, resto-mods, chops, café racers, trackers. Some years are seen as more desirable, and many prefer Standards like yours over Specials, US Customs etcetera. But all equally welcome. And like you say, much better to have the bike out on the road than lying unused in a shed.

We welcome all forms of XS650 here. The chop/not chop decision is yours alone. Unmolested Standard XS650s are becoming rare and you seem to have a nice example. Later Special XS650s seem to be plentiful and are often rather inexpensive.

On more interesting matters, I found some metal in the oil filter but nothing super alarming. Should probably investigate further tho.

Put in new oil, battery and fixed a temp gas solution from a funnel. Checked for a spark and for some reason it had PB8SE plugs instead of PB7SE.

Anyhow, this happened!
 
Did you look at the sump filter? Did you know it is there.
Nope. And as silly as it is, I knew it was there. Was supposed to check it, but with a brainfart I put in the oil before I got around doing that.

Then it was getting late so I decided to see if it starts. Going to drain it again tomorrow and check both filters.

Possibly running on one cylinder there ..But no worries it can take some time before both cylinders wakes up
A couple minutes .. float valves starts flexing
 
Indeed welcome - you’ll find all you need here :) and a little more ! Don’t know how part supply are in Finland, however in Denmark there’s a shop with a large amount of XS parts new and used - check it out

About the 5th gear overdrive, Heiden states on theirs that it fits 78 and above:

”Note: Yamaha changed the shape of transmission gear teeth from 78 on and this is indicated by lines cut into the crest of each tooth.”

The xs650shop.de has similar product, but doesnt offer much details about the fit, just that it fits perfect and runs without problems. Then there is the one from Mikesxs, and it states to fit all models.

Anyone got more insight on these? I’ll be ordering bunch of parts and as my tansmission aint working, figured i’ll go for the overdrive as it seems I’ll have to open the transmission anyhow.
