New project : 1975 Suzuki T500 Titan

3 days in Evaporust. I think I might have to replace the juice soon. It still works but is noticeably slower to remove rust. Before and after with brushing rust every 24 hours. Por15 today.

Evapo-Rust s great stuff. I've used it a lot. Now I make my own thanks to @Downeaster.
It does a very good job.

One liter (a quart is close enough) of water
100 grams of citric acid
40 grams of Sodium Carbonate (Arm & Hammer washing soda, also used for electrolysis)
A few drops of dish soap.

Thx. I’ve tried a similar recipe but if iirc when I used it the part flash rusted very quickly. I’ll have to try again thought as Evaporust it do expensive now.

Brush on some Ospho and the flash rust will melt away, leaving the bare metal protected againt flash rusting for months with no other treatment.
I've got a quart bottle I bought almost 5 yrs ago and still have most of it left.

Headlight shell painted with POR15 and silver paint. Will wait a couple of days for it to cure before putting it on the bike.

Curiosity got the best of me so I pulled the rear axle and removed the wheel. Nice, like new inside. New brake shoes and cush hub rubbers too 😃. The hub itself need a serious cleaning and as mentioned before needs new spokes so that will make it easier.

Check out the cool little jack I scored at the swap meet this weekend. Works perfectly for supporting the swingarm.

All very nice!!

Tire off, spokes removed (good decision to replace them), started trying to clean up the hub. The rim doesn’t look so bad so I may recycle it to keep costs down. While it’s off I might put it up for sale and if I can get 25-50% of a new rim I’ll go that route. Interesting the rear spokes are the same as the XS. The XS spokes are a constant diameter but the Suzuki spokes have a thicker shoulder at the hub. I’ll see if the nipples fit the rim. Something tells me they are thicker.

Before pics of the hub.

I’m not 100% happy with the polishing job but it looks way better than when I started. I can’t get an even shine and I think it’s because someone is too lazy to change the buffing wheels. It will be a while before I get the spokes so I can go at it again. Closer inspection revealed the rim has quite a bit of pitting and tiny rust marks but I think that’s ok because my goal is a nice rider, not a show piece. We’ll see.

XS vs Titan Spokes: appear to be same bend angle and length. Diameter differs. XS spokes are 4.0mm and Titan are 3.4mm. The XS spokes fit ok in the hub since the Suzuki spokes were quite loose in the hub holes. Threaded section same length, nipple diameter close enough? The XS nipple is longer but it has a non threaded counterbore. Looks like I can use the XS spokes. Wonder if I’ll be lucky and the front will fit too? Pay no attention to the bend angles in the pics.

Can somebody measure the length of a front spoke for a 36 spoke, 19” rim.

So opinions - would you use the XS spoke on the Titan? I tried to order spokes “locally” and they want me to mail originals to replicate or provide proper drawings.

Please lmk what you would do.
