I just bought an old but in good shape none running 1982 650 HS. I have had a couple of theses bikes a 1978 and a 1980 years ago. I found this one for a very good price in Mesa Az. it had been in a garage in New York state for a few years but most of its life was Az. It came with the key, manual and title. It has great compression, the tank is clean it kicks over and I got the electric starter to work once. All the control light came on and it cranked over. I turned it off to pull the plugs to look for spark and now I cant get the the key to turn anything on? Any advice were to start looking?

After all day of working on it, I got it to turn over. And at 5:00 pm I got it started!

Jus' remember to put some air in the front tyre!

But seriously, if the bike's been stood, the tyres'll be old and it's a good idea to replace with new rubber. You can check the date of manufacture of a tyre, there's a date code on the sidewall. Old tyres look fine but they lose flexibility and grip over time.

Two new tires go on tomorrow.

The cast drum brake rear rim was a one year only production in the states for the ‘81 model - rare as hens teeth. The 19” front cast rim appeared on many models, common as dirt.
The ‘82 and ‘83 HS models had the 48 spoke rear and the 72 (?iirc) spoked front rim from factory.
The cast mags are nice that they’re tubeless.
