Hi All! My name is Scott. I'm new to the forum and world of the venerable XS650. I got into motorcycles late in life and have been working exclusively on old Hondas up until now. Why not? They're relatively cheap, easy, and plentiful. Below is my latest project and current rider.

Recently, however, I went to the One Moto show here in Portland, Oregon, USA, and saw about half a dozen bikes sporting the XS650 power plant. It's a beautiful motor and the variety of different bikes it was being used in got me intrigued. Bobbers, choppers, brats, survivors, trackers, you name it, they were all represented. After some research on the internet, in general, and this site, in particular, I was hooked. I started searching the usual places for viable specimens for sale. I didn't want anything too nice since I plan to customize. I ended up driving three hours to pick up a basket case bobber project from a really nice guy who's getting out of motorcycles.

The main bits are a '78 XS-2F frame and '80-'81 XS-SH motor. The frame has been stripped and the rear hoop chopped off. The PO had redone the front fork stanchions, shortening them by about 2" and fitted some shorter rear shocks for an all around lower stance. The motor turns over and that's about all I know so far. The accompanying boxes contain a variety of aftermarket chopper bits (peanut tank, fat rear fender, 2-into-1 Mac exhaust, etc.), a few OEM parts (carbs, gauges, etc.), and a wealth of manuals (Clymer, Haynes, and FSM). It looks like almost enough for a full bike! (but, of course, that's never the case, right?)

I was fooling around out in the garage after getting it home and uncovered an old tank that I had laying around. For giggles, I threw it on the XS and I really liked the look! I hadn't seen anything like that combo at the show or in my subsequent searches on the web. I think I'm going to start going in a patina / bobber / brat / whatever direction with this build and see where that takes me.

Looking forward to being part of the community and getting to know you all!

Thanks for the warm welcomes all around!

I stuck the motor in an hung the exhaust on last night, just to get an idea of how this might go. I'm liking it!

Regarding the bars, I know that they are controversial. That:s kind of what I like about them! 😜 I usually go with lower, super bike style bars on my projects. However, I want this one to feel more "uncivilized". Nothing says that better than apes, IMHO!

It is your bike.

Any ability to lower the front and/or raise the back?
I'm totally open to suggestions. The worst thing that can happen is that I ignore them!

I want the front of the tank to line up with the forks, too. The forks were already lowered by the PO. I think I could get a little more out of them by sliding them up in the triple tree.

The current shocks are 11.5". I think something slightly longer would work. The seat would still be fairly level with a rider on it. I was thinking of getting better shocks for this build anyway. Some nice Ikons or Progressives.

I still also need to weld some mounts on for the tank. It's just sitting on some blocks of wood for the mock-ups. Within reason, I can raise or lower either end of the tank all I want to get it lined up.

Okay, I think this is the general idea I'll be working with.

CB200 tank, shortened CL175 seat, vintage Japanese 5 1/5" headlamp, buckhorn bars, chopper rear fender attached to swing-arm with a factory rear tail light. I'm going to go with original length rear shocks, about 1-1 1/2" longer than what's on there now. I don't need dual discs on the front, so one of those rotors will be going. I'll stick with the MAC exhaust for now.

Engine mods, I think I'll be installing a PM charging system and going battery-less. I'm going to get rid of the electric start and will be upgrading the ignition system.

Time to start the build thread!

Opinions are like belly-buttons; everyone has their own. Here's my two-bits worth:
- all of the bike's elements need to be consistent with the overall style and therefore with one another. I realize we all work with what we've got, so concessions often need to be made...
- the style is set by the overall stance, the rear fender, the bars, the headlight and to a lesser degree, the tank
- IMHO, the front fender and 2-into-1 are inconsistent with the style and therefore clash
- the seat and rear frame rails create a strong horizontal line which should be matched by the tank, When set at an angle, the bike looks like its got a broken back
- so either fender-less up front or maybe even better, a fender of the same style as the rear, individual pipes, probably low-slung but could be the "Yo-Momma" style, leveled tank and maybe shortened seat.

I usually try to avoid expressing design opinions, but you seemed to soliciting opinions. I apologize if my comments offend anyone.

...and, oh, by the way, I'm often very critical of my own design decisions, to the point of re-doing things that just ain't right. I've got a few of those going on right now!

Thanks for the feedback, @atom4488. This is going to be my first customized build, so I appreciate suggestions. I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes and hopefully will be able to learn from them.

"Broken back" sounds consistent with the style I'm going for! I'm coming around to your side, though, when it comes to the front fender. I'll see if I can modify the Sportster fender that it came with for a better fit. Once the other bits are sorted out I'll revisit the pipes, too.
