New xs owner

Here's a pic of the engine I put together for my bike. You can't see the case stampings, but you can clearly see the painted color on the top half vs the unpainted lower.... jus' like yours.

There will be a technical answer and it will of course involve the spec limits and a micrometer. But short of that a good guide is to see if you can feel ridges with your fingernail - if you can't, probably good to go. Usual caveats . . .

Book sez to install a good (new) wrist pin and wobble it. If you feel any play at all, the rod is bad. Jus lookin' at yours you can see the copper plating is worn away... you'll have play. :(

Yes there is play the question is How much splitting the crank can run to $ 500 more if a shop is doing it
which is something to avoid for most Enthusiasts.

Ending there --> 630 Euro $ 680

It depends on the plan ..May I suggest getting that new pin (new) wrist pin taking it to an experienced senior re-builder having him feel it
I Had the fortune to have one at the dealer retired but doing some smaller jobs on the side.
Hoping for the best.

Difficult to see in the picture but Perhaps usable --with some more Noise..But dont take my Word for it..

Although the technical test for a viable small rod end is the wiggle-for-play, I believe that Jim has identified the critical variable in his reply #93, that is the copper plating's condition. To the best of my knowledge, the copper plating is essentially the bearing surface; if it is worn away, then you have no bearing.

There is no way to renew the surface.

I have this condition in my spare engine's small ends, and after consulting with the membership a few years ago, I resigned it to being a parts source.

You, my friend, need another project. An idle mind is the devil's workshop.
