Hi all, I'm new to the site but gleaning some great info from the past threads.
In the process of reviving a 1981 XS650H that's been sitting in a shed for 12+ years. Some nice chats with Mike "Mercury" Morris.
Installed his Dyno carb kits, installed Boyer Branden ignition, replaced stock airbox with Uni pods.
Cleaned the tank, new fuel lines, fuel filter. Petcock leaked; gambled on an ebay rebuild kit - still leaks.
Replaced fuse box with blades.
new oil, new oil strainers/filters.
Replaced the rotor with rebuilt from Custom Rewinds.
New NGK plugs from the UK
cam chain tension set, valve clearances set. She's running; not great but pretty darn good considering its been collecting dust for over a decade and likely never got much attention before that.
Current status:
- with BB ignition set at LH side of engine case drain slot (approx. full advance), idle timing settles advanced ahead of the idle timing range @1200RPM. seems to run a little better on RH side of the slot (but that would be roughly 4 deg retarded?)
- leak checked and believe the LH throttle seals are sucking. Hate the idea of pulling those little butterfly screws out.
- after warming up, the headlight indication at instruments comes on; but intermittent.
Where to go from here?
- replace the throttle shaft seals (order from Partzilla or Boats.com at $9 each
- adjust the pilot air mixture next (don't expect much need for that until the leak is fixed). Their sitting at 3.5 turns out now per MMM instructions.
- while the carbs are off, replace the old intake boots (they don't appear to be leaking, but old and stiff like me) - MMM has "made in Japan". or JBM.
When running well, the list is pretty long
- chase done the headlight issue
- swing arm bushings
- front forks and shocks
- etc., etc., etc.
There's my story, look forward to sharing more as the project progresses. I'm lousy at photos, but will try to get a few posted.
