Stay clear ...

Beautiful! I’d buy that R90 without hesitation. Low mileage ( assuming it hasn’t rolled over ) , well cared for, (looks like ) nice original paint. When I bought my R100 it had 44,000 miles on it and it had never been apart, I rode it for years and never had to do any repairs, just maintenance. Back when I had my BMW I ran into a guy with an R90 and we were comparing notes, I remember liking his bike very much!

Gary looks at that and thinks “ I could bring it back”. I look at that and see a big black hole that I would throw way too much money into 😄, I’ve come to realize there are guys like Gary who can take crusty old lumps like this and just fix what doesn’t work. Then there’s guys like me……and it took me a long time to realize this about myself….. I want everything to look or be new and I buy waaay too many parts and before you know it I’m into a bike for much more than it’s worth. 🙄

Nothing wrong with that.
If you can afford it that is .
Then it's worth every penny if it makes you happy.
I was recently reading about (probably on these forums) some guy who at the age of 81, felt confident enough to spend $21,000 on a brand new motorcycle.
Much to the disapproval of all his relatives, who are apparently looking forward to inheriting his fortune.
Well that's twenty grand they won't be seeing.

BMWs excel at a different kind of performance, running at high speeds for hours on end. They love to run down the highway between 70 and 90 all day long, lol. All I ever really did to mine was install a K&N airbox filter element and bump the mains up a size or two to compensate. I would also install better rear shocks (usually Konis). So, it's not about off-the-line performance, stop light to stop light racing, but rather long distances at high speeds. Like, I'll race you to Cleveland and back, lol.

When I was rebuilding my XS I rode a friends gs1100. It was very nice indeed.

Strange how my tastes are changing as I'm getting older.
I could really get into a BM right now, but twenty years ago I wouldn't have given you a thank you for one.

I'm a member of the same club. Back in the 70s, didn't like BMWs. Ugly, slow, old man's bike. Then in the 90s, knew a bloke with an R90S and started to appreciate the practical nature of them. As @Mailman says, doing the valves is a cinch. Likewise adjusting the chain LOL. And now the looks of the old slab-sided tank ones have grown on me.

Have thought about finding a nice old one, a 75/5 would fill the bill, might even turn out to the that one do-it-all bike I dream of?

But personally, still wouldn't consider a new BMW.
Always wanted an R90S as a young’un. Now have The Brat R1200GS, and now I understand. Awesome bike and so brilliant to ride. Still want an R90S tho’
