hello, as of right now? this is the only online group im interacting with so ill pose this question here..
I know many folks. Our bank account was hacked twice in two months. no large numbers but? i should be at a festival in Texas? (umm not) My wife had to do the "go to bank, get a temp card, we will send you new card in 10 days" thing. we purchased a life time beach pass for CT... I personally know 6 other, non related folks who this happened to. next door $27000, my apprentice?$1700... for a tv he puchased at Costco ( he is not a Costco member) anyone else gotta a story?>?

I try and use my credit card for as many purchases as possible and carry cash for under $30 purchases
Credit card co. will back you up and even call you if something seems suspicious ( my card has been scammed a few times )
My bank I use basically for the cash machine they have in one of their drive up lanes
The only thing I would write a check for would be property taxes
There are crafty thieves out there

I've had 3 credit cards duped in 2 years, it happens easier than we think.
I have several cards but only 2 that I use daily, one for general purchases and one for gas and groceries (extra points back).
So if my go to card gets hacked I have back up. I NEVER use my ATM Debit card for anything except my bank ATM, so there's no direct link to my bank accounts.

Wife's credit card got cloned while in FL... was used in the Chicago area to take 13 successive identical cash advances <$100 each. Visa made good. No idea how/when it could have been cloned, as she is very cautious with her card. My practice follows what the others have said; all purchases on a credit card, debit card for ATM cash only and then preferably only at the issuing bank's ATMs.

When you say that your bank account got hacked, how do you mean specifically? I assume they took money from you. How did they achieve that? Did they hack your online password, log in and initiate a wire transfer or payment from the webpage? Did they clone your debit card at some hacked ATM?

I got hit for about $2800 a few weeks ago. Three seperate hits in growing denominations. I hit the bank when I saw it and the reversed each transaction. I changed accounts but now log into the accounts each day to verify... Life Sucks.
On a Rally and checking account got hit again for $750. Charges were transfered from the account I closed 6-8 weeks ago. Bank should know better than to honor charges against a closed account.

Hi ,a little late but they charged event tickets on my debit card. i really do like the idea of only using the card for atm withdrawls at my bank. Two thoughts... its a shame its come to this... or i gotta turn my pipe wrenches in for a life of crime lol

Chances are that you used the debit card at an ATM equipped with a "skimmer" which records your card # and also the PIN and then uses it for nefarious purposes. Happened to me once too. Canceled the card, got a new one, no more problem.
Another possibility is that if you maybe used it elsewhere for some payment, it was written down and then abused. Happened to the in-laws and it turned out it was one of the staff members at their doctor's office who was stealing card #s. She got fired immediately.
Nonetheless, if nobody is accessing your actual bank account and only using the card #, the solution is very simple and a new card will put a stop to this theft.

I got a new debit card a while back.
About ten days after I got it I received an email from Amazon that someone was trying to use the card to make a purchase.
They had tried three times to buy <$5 items. The charges were rejected because they entered the incorrect expiration date. They were testing the card, trying to guess the date.
After three tries Amazon kicked them out.
The thing is I had never used that card anywhere. It never left my house.
So either the bank has a security problem or, more likely, someone used a computer program to generate a valid card number.
I don't use and never will use a debit card. The only reason I got it was because the bank kept badgering me about having a second form of ID when I go in to cash checks. (I had the card de-activated but technically it meets their criteria when they ask.)

Another time almost twenty years ago I had a credit skimmed and cloned when I was in the U.K.
I'm pretty sure it happened at a restaurant.
The thieves bought boots, made phone calls, and took taxi rides to tune of $600.
Fortunately it was easily proven that I was nowhere near the U.K. when this happened.

You always wonder what level of Law Enforcement activity exists after these incidents. I, of course, prefer a tight suspending wire around testicle for the miscreants...
