So I attempted to try this nylon screw mod because I'm running out of ideas on what could be wrong with my charging system. I have a 1978 xs650 with an after market reg/rec combo. I put the new screws in and now both brushes are ungrounded. I hooked up the black wire from the stator/rotor assembly to the brown wire from my reg/rec and connected it to power after the main switch. Whites to whites green to green and the black from reg/rec to ground. Here's my problem. Before I switch to nylon screws I had my black wire hooked up to the black from my reg/rec and brown to main switch and my slap test worked when I turned the key. Now that I put the new screws and switched the wire set up,the slap test doesnt work. I really dont know what else to do. Running out of ideas. If any one could help I would very much appreciate it. Just trying to ride before the winter. Thanks.

I guess the first thing is to ask...........Did you buy the Reg/rect........

Second question.............If you didn't........ have you identified the reg/rect as an A type, (used on factory TCI ignition models 80-84).
Because what you are doing with the nylon screws is Changing a B type system to make it work with an A type System.

Third question............if you did buy the reg/rect then who from and did you get the right one for your Points bike

Forth question.........Are you sure the Reg/Rect is for the Alternating current system and not a PMA system..............

Post #5 ........Still need to identify your Reg/Rect is the correct one for this procedure to work

Bought the reg-rec online for an xs650 70-79 Not the PMA model.

Then you don't need to use nylon screws and isolate the earthed brush
Ok. But how do I hook up the stator wires? Because If I hook it up black from stator to brown from reg/rec then to power after ignition I blow a fuse. So I have just been hooking up black from stator to black from reg/rec. And brown from reg/rec to power after switch.

That diagram i posted is the set up for a 70-79 Points model combined solid state Reg/rect on a 70-79 Points model bike.

Here is how the bikes Regulator and Rectifier is set up from the Factory............All you are doing when installing the Solid State combined Reg/Rect is moving the Separate components together. This will eliminate one Black wire.
xs8 78SE crop 1 copy Text.jpg text Is this correct Jayels answer copy5.jpg

I'm not an electrical diagnostic expert......If you are connecting up your unit as per the diagrams and it is blowing fuses then you have a short in the system or the wrong unit ........

I think you may have the wrong unit or just confused................Not enough information from you..............go back to my first post and answer ALL questions......Not just for me but for Id purposed and recheck to make sure the unit ordered and bought and received is the correct one..............

Threads of this nature should be in the Garage not region specific...........

Page one in this link, (also a link in the thread i linked to in Post #2), explains the differences between the Stator, 79 and earlier, 80 and later and their relation to a combined reg/rect, 70-79 and 80 and later and which one requires the Nylon screws...........The link explains it better than this sentence.

Not sure if this could be my problem. I bought a cheapo reg/rec off ebay and it says yamaha xs650 78-85.

Post a link to the seller.......who knows what the seller is selling as he doesn't obviously........78-85 are specials. 2 years are points models and 5 are factory TCI???

Just emailed the seller. But honestly I think that I might just be hooking up the stator wires to the reg/rec incorrectly. Do I hook up the black wire from the stator to the black wire from reg/rec? Because the normal screws ground that black wire through the brush. Or would I hook up another wire from both blacks to ground on the battery terminal? Sorry for the abundance of questions, I appreciate all that you've done.

Been looking around eviiBay and found these.........the one you bought is in the links. I think you have bought the 80-83 TCI, (non points model), Reg/rect

70-79, Points Reg/Rect.......These look to usually have 2 plugs to fit straight into the existing loom for the seperate Regulator and rectifier

80-83, TCI Reg/rect.......These look to usually have a single plug to be plug and play on 80-83 bikes

I do not know if your is for the TCI model. It looks to be and the seller states it is for special models, (they don't differentiate some specials are points because they don't know/care). It looks to be for a TCI model and if it is then you will need to do the nylon screws to the brushes on the stator..........

This is covered comprehensibly in the in post #2

Yea makes sense. Mine came with a single connector block with 8 wires in it. Just looked at the link with the 80's reg/rec diagram. I dont have a brown wire comin from my stator, other than that I have everything hooked up the same with the nylon screws attached and get no slap to my alternator cover.

No you wont have a brown wire from the brushes on the Stator because your stator is a 70-79........There is a black and green wire from the brushes

There will be a black wire from the brush and this has to be connected to the brown wire from the 80-83 Reg/Rect.....and this is going to the ignition switch for power when key is switched on.

You are taking away the earth/ground wire, (black in your case), from the brush, (installing nylon screws to stop the brush from grounding), and making it live by connecting it through the brown wire when the ignition switch is turned on..........

In the 80-83 diagram, (previous link in post #16 redone below), Just think of the brown wire from the Brush as being black, (as per your 70-73 Stator), and having to splice it into the brown wire from the Reg/Rect/Ignition

Am i making sense?

NOTE; I have not done this. This is what i understand from reading information others have posted and looking and working with these diagrams.........

Yes it makes complete sense. However I hooked up my stator wires and reg/rec wires this way and nothing happend. No slap to side of case. Although the 20amp fuse does not blow anymore when I have the nylon screws attached.
