Oil Leaks - 1978 XS Special

I never looked at the baffle plate on an early breather but it makes sense that if it's different, that's why it's dripping oil. I'm going to assume you don't have the "anti-kink" protection springs on your breather hoses ......

..... and if that's true, that explains why they're kinking on you.

Yes those springs are helpful. Different people will use various hose materials for these vent tubes. Many are stiff and more kink resistant while other more flexible hoses may collapse on a tight bend. If you want to support the hose at the bends, you can do as 5T has shown or if you do a bit of searching you should be able to find a small spring to install inside the hose. The small amount of space it will occupy shouldn’t impede flow enough to be a worry.

I use the original thin wall type hose, available from most of the 650 parts places. I get the "bulk" length but they also sell shorter lengths w/ the protection spring if you need it .....

I have the springs so that's why I get the "bulk" length. This is wonderful stuff, very soft and flexible, and the original springs fit it nicely. You can find automotive heater hose that will fit but it's thicker and the protection springs won't fit on it.

Actually, I do have the springs, it's just that I'm using the original plastic hoses that have been conformed/hardened into one smooth curve to fit the 72 frame and straight breather ends. Just thought someone may have experimented with this. I should be swapping it when my right side cover gasket comes in.
I'm doing my sttarter gear also. I've never had a problem with it, but I'm using it more lately, since it is getting harder for me to kick it.
As always, I appreciate the advice. I will replace the breather hoses with a softer rubber. I actually meant to 7 years ago. Should have the breather results by Halloween!

Thanks again!

No, it's a power brake check valve, available at most auto parts stores for about $5 ......

Power Brake Check Valve.jpg

Apparently, PCV valves won't work in this application. They have a metal ball bearing inside and I guess it can't move fast enough to match the engine pulses. The valve will stick open or closed. The power brake check valve has a rubber flap inside and I guess it's able to keep up with the engine pulses. This valve is perfect for our needs. The inlet side is a perfect fit into the breather hose, and it's 90° configuration allows it to be poised over your pod, directing any oil vapor or drips down into it. That being said, I've never noticed any oil coming out of it.

In a recent thread the topic of engine oil thinning and how this affects getting into neutral when stationary was discussed. See the comments by TM regarding clutch performance and Bob Kelly III regarding multigrade oil degradation:

https://thexscafedotcom.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/xs650-hall-on-oil/

If you use a 10w type multigrade oil then the oil will thin towards a lower value than if you were to use a 20w type. The result is that after many miles the oil viscosity may be getting lower for the 10W types so lubrication may be suffering more than if the 20W type were used. The key to XS oil use has got to be changing it regularly. I do not know when the Mobil-1 extended life 10W60 was being changed - probably at about 1000 miles is my guess. People are suggesting 1000 - 1500 miles but based on TM's comments in the above link regarding clutch performance it seems 1000 miles is the better time to change the oil.

Perhaps you should just go for a 20W-50 motorcycle oil. The following link to "thexscafedotcom" gives a Tony Hall article:

https://thexscafedotcom.wordpress.com/category/m-engine/motor-oil/

Edit (11/03/21): Link to Tony Hall article will not work. Instead type Tony Hall into the search facility at top left of page.

Although this covers several topics to do with lubrication/filters/cooler, in the last half of the second column he speaks about oil and suggests not to go thinner and when best to change oil versus regular or infrequent running.

I just read the Tony Hall oil thing again and it dawned on me that he mentioned most high mileage bikes have had frequent oil changes. Well....

I bought the old 72 at about 4K miles and didn't do the top end until about 80 to 85k miles. I've only changed the oil at 2,000 miles +/- 100 miles at least in the last 11 years since I put it on the road again. When I bought it in 76, I was 25. I'm sure I easily surpassed 2k miles in my endeavors. Maybe up to 3K. I do remember it not shifting into neutral very well in the summer. I will admit, when the shifting became difficult, I did change the oil. Well it was in NJ, so it wasn't super hot.

Important to note, I only used Castrol 20W-50, and sometimes Castro HM 20W50. I still only change it at 2K miles. It's a solid bike! Since I installed the 750 kit, I've been using all kinds of oil. I mentioned Castrol 10W-60, but at the time, (2018) it was $16/qt. I have no fookin idea what it costs now & I don't care, I ain't buying it. I sometimes use Mobil 1, 15W50, (it has extra ZDDP in it), and sometimes Walmart 20W-50 mineral, and sometimes Mobil 1, 20W-50, motorcycle Twin oil. Also expensive. I may just go back to Castrol 20W-50 mineral in the summer and 10W40 in the winter, with some ZDDP additive.

What it boils down to is, without a real oil filter, it doesn't matter what kind of oil you use, you still have to change the XS oil at at least 2000 miles.

Note: My Virago XV750 has a a real oil filter and the book says change the oil at 4K miles. At 4K, the oil is about as dirty as the XS at 2K miles. I change my Virago at about 3K religously, and the filters are cheap.

For me the sign that an oil change is due is when the gearbox becomes a bit clunky when changing. Depending on the oil this ranged from approx. 900 miles to 1500 miles. The 900 mile time was when I tried out a 10W-40 so I just stuck to 20W-50 from then on and changed mainly at 1000 - 1200 miles.

I like oil changes, they make me feel like I'm doing something useful in life...:hump:

OK! I changed out the breather block tediously with a ground down shorty allen wrench, 1/4 turn at a time. Unfortunately I haven't ridden it yet to test if it will blow oil out. I was busy, then away, and tonight it's going down to 34 degrees F, and tomorrow no higher than 40.
But, here are pics of the blocks and the baffles.

72 on the left and 75 on the right. The 72 has steelwool or plastic gauze like stuff inside.

Well, I took her out yesterday for a short stint. Booze run, actually! Stop and go, back roads, highway, 80+ then home. It sat overnight and NO LEAKS! Yah!
So, apparently Yamaha addressed the breather leaks. In the 70's, I knew that mine leaked from the breather hoses, but I accepted it and never talked about it with my friends with their XS1-B's and XS2's. We had more important things to do! Remember Golden Boy! He and Iused to ride 90 miles to the Jersey Shore for the day, then ride home at night! Good times!

Yamaha may have been embarrassed that their horizontally split cased marvel actually leaked like a BSA on the showroom floor! Well, I feel confident now when I park on someones newly powerwashed, white concrete driveway and not have to apologize for the oil stains. (Actually I've found that unless it's a grease stain, the Sun bleaches out ordinary oil stains fairly quick).

Don't know if the 73 or 74 have breather leaking issues, but there are a few that used to come to the VYR's. Hey, GGGary's friend has a 74.

Note: I have the shorter, (lower marked), 75 dipstick. I've been using it since 2018 and the 750 kit! So, oil level is probably not the cause.

Ride with care!

You may be interested to read the following technical page from SmedSpeed in the UK. Just scroll down to the oil section:
http://www.smedspeed.co.uk/tech.html

He has been using the 10W-60 extended life Mobil. The 10W part interests me because it will mean less strain on the sump oil strainer in colder weather.

Hey Paul! I'm reading this again 7 years later and repeating myself also 7 years later. Well that's age I guess. Well anyway, Smedley talked about the discontinued Mobil 1, 15W50. Well it isn't discontinued here in the USA. Oh, I must apologize for our present administration. 51% of our population voted him in, but 75% now wish he was gone. (Including me).
Ok, well, the Mobil 1 15w50 is sold here for about $27 for a 5qt jug at Walmart. That's much cheaper than the Castrol 10W60. I've been using it consistantly in my XV750. I'm glad to know that he approves it.
Thanks!

Very Nice Virago!! I find the Virago to be a very comfortable and gentle bike to ride. I have the 88 XV1000SE which came to me all burnt out but now has a new lease of life. Unfortunately it lacks the original touches like yours...:hump:

I have been running a UK brand of oil for a few years in the Virago: Morris Race V-Twin 20W-50. These V-Twin oils may offer an advantage for the XS650 because they have a higher temperature stability additive package because of the lower cooling on the V-Twin rear cylinder.

I spotted an owl by my house and took its picture. It turned out to be a Barred Owl. My daughter, the animal person, said, "Hey lets send out Barred owl calls!" So we went on youtube and found Barred owl calls, and sure enough they came.
That day, I heard owls in the area, so I put on the owl calls with a speaker while I was working on my boat. I heard flapping and when I looked up, there he/she was.
This sounds wierd but I have an owl thing. I've rescued 2 different owls, like 15 years apart, from the middle of the road. Now, when I call them, they come to see me! Try it. Go to you tube on your fone, attach, (bluetooth) a speaker, and call your favorite owl!

Shoot, yours looks great! Wow, I love it! I envy the chrome fenders. Yes, it's comfortable, gentle, and VERY EASY TO RIDE, compared to my old XS650.

They say motorbikes are bird magnets!!
They're apparently bat magnets too! One night whilst, (I love that word), riding home from a biker friend's house, I saw a flash of light. A flash Kind of like when I hit a deer with my truck, (those who have hit a deer at night know about the flash), but this was a little flash. Anyway, when I got home I found a dead bat wedged between the gauges of my XS650. Poor little guy! Anyone have similar experiences?

Oh, hi, Marty. And GLJ, hope you're feeling as normal as possible. We're thinking about you!

I was riding the XS in the daytime and as I came around a blind corner I had to hit the brakes very hard. Standing in the middle of the road was a large male peacock with all his feather displayed. I don't think a collision would have been a good option. Unfortunately I did not have a dash camera fitted...:hump:
