Hello, Noobie here. Feel free to ream me out if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find any answers. I'm about to join the xs650 club with a chopped up 1980 that has mag wheels and disc brakes. Because the previous owner chopped off the rear end ill be welding on one of the various hardtails found online.
Id really like to use some older Drum brake spoked wheels on this build, and im wondering if a pre-78 drum rear wheel, and pre-71 drum front wheel with fit on my 1980 with little modification. If not, what would you recommend to be the most economical way to achieve this task. Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum, sochmo.

Drum wheel rear is doable.
The brake lever pivot shaft and brake stay will be different.
Do a forum search on "brake stay", posted by member "Fredintoon".

The 70-71 drum front on later forks is challenging, but has been done.
Some ideas:

Welcome to the party, sochmo! Anything is doable, with a little work. As a wise friend of mine once said "...nothing was ever made that couldn't be modified." And my childhood hero (Evel Kneivel) said "...it's only impossible 'cause nobody's ever done it before." You may run into a fitment problem putting the drum brake on later model forks. Send us pictures! We like pictures!

No need to apologize sochmo. The best way to find info is to use the "Search" function at the top-right corner of your screen. It really IS a good tool. If that doesn't turn up an answer - then ask-away.

Be sure to post pictures and always state the year of your bike as there are small but important differences across the years from the earliest 1970 XS1 to the last 1984 XS650SK Specials That information helps everyone to provide the best possible answers to typical questions.

Welcome to XS650.com!

Hello Sochmo and welcome from Virginia. I'll let the experts continue to explain as I am only just diving into XS650 glory myself.

Thanks Guys, here's some pictures of the 1980 xs650, Picking it up for $250 tomorrow! What do you think my best and cheapest option would be for replacement spoked wheels with drum brakes? I have a set of 74 or 75 CB550 spoked wheels in the garage, but only the rear has a drum. Cheers!

Oh, I also might be able to pick this up (Same year) for a few bucks more. Do you think this would be a better deal in my situation? How much do you think it would cost to have the front wheel laced with drum hub?

Be flat out finding a front drum brake hub that will take a 64 spoke rim..........

Hardtailing = fabrication for a drum brake rear........or a disk brake rear..........no interchanging problems because your starting with a blank canvas

If you want to sell the mags let me know. That guy dropped from $400 to $250 good deal I was looking at that but to far of a ride right now. I also just bought parts from a guy who has spokes front and back for sale. Rear drum brake but disk front.
