I'm about 95% done with my wiring on my '79 XS650. I bought the revival cycle wiring harness kit with my m-unit, and glad I did. I kept my original battery tray and lead acid battery, and used the tool compartment to hide my M-Unit.

If you're going to tackle the electrical, I would just start from scratch. Buy the kit and do it right

Ingot the M-button also, but I got clip Ons that wouldn't even hide the wires well with it, so I didn't end up using it. But so far everything is pretty simple.

How did you hook up your power and ground from the rectifier? Straight to the battery?

I haven't got that far yet. I have a HHB PMA/CDI kit. But I'm going to run the MOSFET rec/reg Positive straight to the battery, and the rec/reg is grounded to the frame. I have the power wire from the relay running into the output ignition spot on the M-Unit. I also looped the power wire to the coil through my oem kill switch. I'm not using the push button "kill" option on the M-Unit.

What part is this rectangle box near the coil area?
That looks like the headlamp checker - silly idea which adds a lot more wiring, so if your dipped beam fails, it automatically switches the main beam on. On my XS, removed as many safety features as possible, to simplify the wiring. Another was the turn signal cancel - save a bunch of wiring but you got to remember to turn the signals of yourself. Doh!

I agree with @2BallCane, just buy the kit and build up the system with the things you need.

Did a mock up of the wiring for the ignition.

Pick up: 3 wires but there's an extra white wire the is white w/ black. Is this the side stand relay?

Stator: 6 wires. What is the brown and light blue wire? Brown is main switch (DN)? Did it come from the key harness? Is the ground?

Reg/rec :
red plugs to white with black.
Empty slot plugs to red w/white (coil)
Black plugs to the orange (coil)
Green plugs to black w/ white (pickup)
Brown plugs to white /red (pickup)
White plugs to white w/ green (pickup)
White plugs to black (ground)
White plugs to nothing

I'm thinking I don't have the correct reg/red. The model is 14-408, can I rewire this to the correct slots?

The only one I can help you with is the stator plug. The brown is switched power from the key and runs to the inner brush. The light blue is the neutral light. It branches off before the alternator and runs to the neutral switch on top of the motor.

I think you may have your reg/rec plug plugged into the wrong harness plug. I think that's the TCI ignition black box plug. The reg/rec plug is going to have 3 whites going into it, along with a red, green, and black.

I could've sworn there's a spacer that goes here. Can some help confirm if there is or isn't supposed to be one here.

Down to these final wires. Note sure what these wires are. White with black from the TCI. Maybe side stand relay? And maybe it plugs to the sky blue? Also, this yellow wire? Is it the oil pressure?

Do replacement wire harness match the color coding of the original? Tech section has the color coding. I posted this only as an example. Skull posted all of them in the Tech section.

I do not know of this is your diagram. Did you look it up in the tech section? I did not look up your year. I am just trying to point you in the right direction..

Here's a good diagram for anyone using stock TCI and new lithium rec/reg 14-408
