Hello to any and all DIY or Professional painters... I'llnsoon be starting the final chapter of my build: PAINT! I'd like to buy all the gear and paint to do it myself but I'd also like to not spend a Duckload of money (you know what I mean)

The paint is going to cost what it costs. I plan on maybe using a mid grade (harbor freight) sprayer if that's something that can still achieve a damn good final result. My questions are abundant but the main questions are: how big (or small) of a compressor can I get away with, how much of each type of paint/primer/lacquer thinner etc would I want to have on hand to paint a gas tank, side covers, and headlight bucket?

It won't be a waste of my money because most bikes I buy could use a paint job and a friend of mine wants to paint his bike too so it works out to have the gear to do it.

I just see so many skewed numbers of how much paint I'll need.

To help with my predicament you'll need to know: the color I'm likely going to choose is going to require a base coat. So I assume that means I'll need 1 part base coat, 1 part metallic/candy color to go over the base coat, I wanna give enough info to help me but not to spoil the color lol.

I'll elaborate more as needed... But I guess my most important question is: will 1 liter of each type of paint (base/metallic/clear) be enough for the headlight bucket, tank, and side covers? I'd like a bit of extra paint for touch ups, and MAYBE a small front fender.

I use these guys... https://autopainthq.com/
Prices are reasonable, they always ship same or next day... and when you call 'em, a human actually answers the phone. They'll work with you on mix and match orders... just all around good guys to deal with.
And their paints are fantastic!! I still use other brands too, but these are the candies I prefer to use.

You can order a quart "kit" that consists of the base, candy/metallic and urethane 2part clear. That will do everything you listed with plenty left over.

Here's my painting thread... and a little motivational teaser. ;)

Just my opinion but you can get a great finish with rattle cans if prepped right and coated with Spraymax 2K
And there's a lot of paint shops out there that can mix any color you desire and put it in a rattle can for you. If he's only doing his bike and maybe 1 or 2 others, that's what I'd recommend too.

I would usually agree for the sake of price and convenience, but spray cans and I do NOT get along. I feel like my biggest issue is laying too heavy if a coat on but I ALWAYS get paint runs with a spray can, and uneven coverage. I'd have a bit more control over a gravity fed sprayer that can be adjusted. I'd also be able to buy a cheap paint to practice on my CB900. I'd also just genuinely enjoy getting some real sprayer experience. It'll cost me a pretty penny, but I'm never one to be upset that I have more tools than I did the day before lol.

The hardest part is trying to figure out how much paint I need of each stage.

To your question on paint quantity. While I have no motorcycle painting experience, I believe that a litter of paint would paint tank, bucket and covers on at least a couple of bikes, no?
This is why I'm recruiting help lol. Google says yes from one source and no from another. Makes things hard to commit to haha

To paint something the size of a gas tank, I use my 8 oz. size touch-up gun. It gives Me a controlled pattern, just like a full-size gun, and is cheaper/easier to clean afterwards. I usually mix up 16oz. of sprayable material and always some left over.
This is great info. What brand gun do you use? Is it easy to adjust and set up?
