What are you final sanding with before buffing?
I shoot 2 clears after the stripes to help fill the edges in. Provided the clear lays out good... 2000, 2500, 3000 or 3500... and then the polish.

Have you tried 5000 with an orbital, obviously doing it by hand where the sander can't reach, on an interface pad followed by 8000? You almost don't have to use any compound. It's cleaner, faster and safer. The bad news is you have to buy a whole box and it's stupid expensive. If you haven't tried it and would like to, P.M. me your address and I'll send you a sheet of each.
