Painting Tins. No really...

The Last of the Mohicans.

Ever have to sand something down and repaint it because it had too many flaws in it? I could prolly count on one hand the number of times I have, with fingers left over. As in almost never.

Ever have to paint something three times before you got it right? I've dug back in the ol' grey matter and couldn't recall a single instance where I had to do that.

How about painting something four times before you got it right? Unheard of, right?

Well, here's a tank I've painted 4 times now. @DogBunny (William) sent me this tank last year. I painted it and managed to fuck it up beyond repair. So I sanded it all off and redid it... only to fuck it up again... and again.

Here's the finished tank. It ain't flawless by any stretch. Unfortunately, I don't do flawless, but it's close enough that a good cut-n-buff will bring it to an acceptable (by my standards) finish.

I was gonna detail here what happened on each go around... but nah. It's wore me to a frazzle, it has. Suffice to say I'll be happy to see it in a box at the UPS Store.

The cut-n-buff was supposed to be done by now. Unfortunately my feet had other ideas. I went for a shot in my left foot on Monday and haven't been able to walk since. Did manage to limp my way through the final clear coat today, but they definitely did something wrong with the needle. It's always sumpin, eh? Cut-n-buff will get done in the next few days.

And as an aside, William has been nothing short of a saint throughout. Thanks brother! :)

Yeah, no need to re-live the torturous history of this tank. At one point Jim was pretty sure that it was possessed.
Jim began painting the tank sometime in mid August 2024 So, he's been working on it for over a year. I got the first paint failure notice on August 31 2024.
Since then, we have exchanged 74 PMs regarding the tank. In those messages, Jim sent me seventeen progress pictures. It always went something like this: Jim would send me pictures of this beautiful tank in one PM, then in the next PM he'd say there was a paint failure and he had to sand it all down and go back to square one again.
I'm not precisely sure, but mostly the failures always had to do with the white stripes. They kept on streaking. I believe that either some of the materials Jim was using changed their formulations or became prohibitively expensive causing him to use different materials that were less forgiving.

And as an aside, William has been nothing short of a saint throughout. Thanks brother! :)
No, you're the saint for soldiering on with this thing to the end. All I had to do was commiserate and encourage.
Coincidentally and fortuitously, I'm finally almost ready to begin on the bike that this tank is going on.
Well despite your struggles , it came out great! 😍

Sorry to hear about your foot. 🙁
Ditto both that!

I know the feeling. When I was a contractor/ jobbing sparky every now and then a job for no particular reason would turn to shit.
All you can do is finish the job to the best of your ability and take the loss.
The tank looks great to me, so take a break and let that foot recover.

@Jim delivered. We as a group are lucky to know and love Jim. I was hoping to get a "Father and Son" pic of near matching @Jim paint schemes today. Alas, the realities of traveling with friends, old bikes and old bodies prevented that. @Ben1 tracker next to my "Red Bike" with the matching CnadyApple Red with White pinstripes might have been a photo for the ages...

I feel you. I've had 3 shots in my spine/discs/nerves in the last 3 months, and I'm the primary caregiver for my wife. It'll sure slow you down.

Looks great Jim. I can't wait to see it in person.

I was half expecting to get a PM from Jim saying that the tank fell off of the work table during the cut-and-buff, or something of that nature, and that he would have to start over from square one.
I have seen @Jims set up and "it ain't fallin' off" his custom tank bucks...
