Picked my new bike up today, spent 5 hours on the Queens highway but as always when it involves a bike, well worth it

Looks nice. Burnt orange is a great colour.

Front forks are an oddity. That Brake rotor is from earlier models, Euro 75/76

Your Euro/GB front rotors from 75 to 79 are smaller than the US rotors. ad the 75/76 rotors changed in 77 to 83/4 to a one piece rotor. Also front rotors are the same size as the rear rotors on the US 78-80 disk brake rear models...............Confused yet..........

The reason is.

Because your earlier, (75/76), front rotors, are smaller the offset looks to be the same as the later one piece type so they will marry into the 77-83/4 calipers. ...On the US models the front calipers will not interchange with the different rotor types..............

NOTE; the front fork lower caliper mount is lower down on the fork tube to accommodate the smaller rotor. These are Euro specific forks and will not interchange with US, Oceania, or the rest of the world front forks.

Some pics to show the difference. ..........Note the position of the lower caliper mount

Early models. US/Oceania 74-76 front rotor. Note the different profile of the inner of the rotor and how the Guard stays are lower on the Euro forks to accommodate the lower caliper mount for the smaller diameter rotor
US/Oceania...........................................................................................................................................Euro

The front forks the guard brackets have finned/ribbed bracing top and bottom of the guard mount. XS650's 34mm and 35mm never had this on the forks but my 80G XS850 has them on the front forks so maybe your forks have been changed to the XS850. They are 36mm.

From my 80G XS850 showing the front guard mount with the extra ribbing

Take those pods off and try it again. those pods often cover the venture on the carb bell and the pleats cause turbulence on the inlet and this effects the diaphragm lift and smooth running.

if not using factory air box Uni filters are best.

Gday Leslie Nice Bike
Two things jump out at me. First, and probably the easiest to check, the pleated cone filters look as if they are pushed onto the carbs a bit deep. There's a lip on the inside of that filter and it could be obstructing the passages in the bellmouth of the carb. Loosen the clamp and pull them back a bit and try again. This is just a test as those filters will probably have to be changed for Unipods anyway. It'll always be a bit of a struggle to get it to run clean with that type of filter.
The other thing is with the set up u have, filters and short pipes, it could be running a bit lean or rich if its been overcompansated for.. The thing is to find out which way to go.
Whilst u fiddling with the filters, take them off and try it again to see if its better or worse.
I use an old Colourtune (remember those) to find out if i'm lean or rich, still saves a lot of time.
Next are the air screws but u may be out of range on those. Read up in the TECH SECTION, full of insight from the Gurus there. These are tests u can do with the carbs on the bike.
The BIG BIG thing with carbs is one adjustment at a time then run. If u do too many changes u wont know where the hell u are or what made the difference.
Good luck mate, it should be something small as the bike looks as if it was built by someone who knew what he was doing.

If it has been sitting for a while, and only runs on the enrichment circuit, it's likely the pilot jets are plugged.
