Project’72

What exhaust are you running and is that an Omar's seat? What's the longest you've ridden it with that seat? Good lookin' bike BTW.

I am lead to believe it is an Omars exhaust..

Took the carbs out today. At first glance I thought everything was pretty good. Well I was fooled. Both slides were stuck. Had to use a heat gun and a plastic wedge to get it out. Other one popped free with a little persuasion from the wedge. Next step is ultrasound everything and general cleaning. I am submitting my paperwork for a bonded title Monday. I don’t want to put any money into it until get a response from the state.

He friend had some issues with a title also. Titles never got transferred from person to person. He found the original owner in a nursing home and had him sign some papers the state required. Only condition was he wanted to see the bike when completed.

Its a plus when the chrome comes out nice after removing years of grime

While awaiting my title status I figured I would start on the gas tank and see what I could do. Since the tank was nearly full I was going to drain some gas through a fine filter to see if anything was loose inside. That turned out to be a dead end since both petcocks are clogged. The green liner was bubbled . I ripped a piece off and put it in acetone to see if if will dissolve and no luck. A quick search showed green liner will dissolve in MEK. Well I don’t want to mess with that stuff and since there is rust underneath it I am going to have it professionally cleaned and lined. I talked to a professional motorcycle restoration facility and they reccomendEd a company in California. About $500-$700 but well worth it to me. That is IF my title application is approved. Probably will dump the tank , remove the petcocks and cap, and get tank ready for shipping.

Make sure you make it 100% clear to them that the gas cap bung is made from aluminum. The tank is steel, but the bung is an aluminum ring that is swaged in place... it can't be removed without destroying it. Many of these places use an acid tank (dip) to remove everything inside the tank. I've read of several cases where the tank was pulled from the dip and the bung was MIA.... it dissolved in the acid. I think I'd even go so far as to write "aluminum in magic marker with arrows pointing to the bung.

I can neither confirm nor deny I've done similar with acid and aluminum.... :er:

I learned the hard way along with my painter about the aluminum bung. It was a beautiful tank and lucky I had several others. I ended up selling that tank to a guy in Norway and always wondered how he fixed or altered it. I was going to put a modern recessed filler in but never got around to it

Today I drained the gas tank. Got about three gallons of nasty smelling gas out of it. I flushed the tank several times with water but it still smells. I think tomorrow I will contact my shipper to see what must be done prior to getting it to California. I bought a tank off eBay long ago and the seller wrapped it up in Saran Wrap.
Anyway I got all the fittings off the tank. Everything came off surprisingly easy and I didn’t lose anything. Those little C retainers for the tank cap retainer shafts are something I definitely don’t want to try to find online….
The tank looks pretty solid. There is a small dent that I will try to remove before it gets shipped. Of course still waiting on the bond title application. Week three now.
Next task will be cleaning the petcocks. Both are blocked.

Took the petcocks apart. They were plugged up with what looks like a combination of tank sealer, rust, dirt, and chewing gum. An hour in the ultrasound today and blowing out with air got maybe 50% out. Probably just replace with new ones.
I got an estimate for getting the one dent removed from the tank: $300.00 and no guarantee that tank won’t be destroyed. Guess I will live with the dent.

You could fill the dent and spray?

Still waiting to hear from the state for my bonded title application. It’s been five weeks now. Couple more weeks I will call or drive to Madison to check on the status. In the meantime I ordered an oil filter and gasket to replace the sump unit. I will then be able to install the carbs, hook up a temp gas tank and see if the engine runs And do a compression test. If I am denied a title I will put it in the classifieds.
