This morning I unwrapped some cams I had put masking tape on the lobes and bearing areas for protection during storage

To my horror the surfaces has started to rust.
Luckily I was able to buff the rust spots out, but it took some time. Then I went and checked other cams I have stored thankfully I had not used tape on them.

Maybe insulation tape would be ok but dont use masking tape.

Denso tape (grease tape) used to protect hydraulic fittings etc from corrosion would work great, both for corrosion and any mechanical damage during storage/ shipping/ handling.
I was thinking the same. Machinery parts often in storage for several decades before use are preserved in Denso tape. It's a mess to work with but extremely effective.

You should know this by now.
Glue on paper tape is rendered tallow from dead cattle.(lye, etc.)
Very basic and rusts iron.

My usual method is oil the part and wrap in newspaper then store in airing cupboard.
I have used denso tape for work and its messy stuff but works well as IBALT said.
I have also used soft seal which is cosmoline under a different name as far as I can see.
Automan I didn't know that but it makes sense now.

When you buy a set of gage pins, each pin is wrapped in that brown oiled paper. I imagine a camshaft (with its ground surfaces not unlike a precision ground bearing or gage pin) is hardly any different, if at all.
Some of those lil wraps are oiled with acidic oil, made acidic from the atmosphere adding H+ to the already acidic oil.

Signal, keep on your old path, and do not use paper towels.

They got it right back in the day, cosmoline. It's a pain to clean off, but it kept rifles from rusting for decades. https://www.amazon.com/Cosmoline-RP-342-Rust-Preventative-Military-Grade/dp/B01MTV41O0
Yea back in the late 70's early 80's I was recieving for navy arms. If memory serves me it was 10 crates of Turkish mausers the crates weighed about never mind not gonna lie don't remember ever put soup in a refrigerator and have that layer of fat at the top picture a 100 Turkish mousers in a crate filled with. Soup fat LOL it was a nightmare.
After that, my nickname was the cosmolone kid

Perhaps you could elaborate on this?
You are saying that the oil used is acidic? What acid is this and how does this add H (Hydrogen?) and what is the consequence of this?
I'd appreciate seeing the references you use?
