My XS650SK got painted. It was a package deal that came with fixing paint damage to my car. This was done by a local cottage industry painter. My car had to be fixed and I had recently knocked the motorcycle over and wrecked the tank. I got at least what I paid for and I am content to say the least. End of backstory.

I’m not sure if I’m going to warm up to the orange peel finish. Can I fix this with just my hands? What exactly do I need? I do not wish to go to great expense.

Can you see those deep scratches? This is original paint. How can I fix that? I have too many irons in the fire for a repaint, so an improvement would be good if I can pull it off.

Thanks fellas!

It kind of depends on what "system" the painter used on the tank/covers, base/clear, simple lacquer, or simple enamel. I'm old, there may be more potential paint "systems" in use by folks that do it for a living. Maybe pull the tank and in a low visibility spot underneath, try block sanding a section to see if it can be "leveled" w/o sanding through the color. If so, then try wet sanding down to say 1500/2000, then compounding/polishing and see what you get. This will work with lacquer, I'm not sure if straight enamel will respond as well. Base/clear? No idea, as noted, I'm old- none of the base/clear factory paint on any of my cars has held up well after say 15-20 years, which is the point they become affordable to me.
