Road trip - Northern Scotland

For the past week I have been travelling through Northern Scotland. We’ve seen many great sights and have had a great time. On the way back to our hotel, we stopped on the highway to take a few pics and I spotted a truly unique motorcycle. Throughout the day we had seen many groups of adventure bikes but pulling into the parking lot I spotted a Royal Enfield. What really caught my eye was a “Diesel” badge on the tank.

I met the owner and he brought me up to speed on his unique ride. It started out in life as a 2007 Royal Enfield but he bought a Yanmar L100N air cooled diesel motor and had a fellow in Scotland do the conversion for him. Perhaps @Raymond knows who does this. The conversion was very nicely done. The motor puts out around 10hp and the owner says he can do up to 51mph. A super cool bike. I wish I could get one back home! I’ll try to post a video of it running once I get back home.

That is very cool! What a clean looking conversion!
I looked up that engine, near as I can tell it’s an L100, I was wondering how they converted it from a rope pull start to electric….but further research showed it can be ordered either way! I hope you are enjoying your trip to Scotland, and hope your weather is cooperating!

We were prepared for cold, wet weather. We lucked out and so far no rain! It’s been cool and some days windy. Temperatures ranged from 9-15C.

We went looking for the Loch Ness monster but didn’t see her. Beautiful country, rich in history.

A few of the highlights: Edinburgh castle; Scone Palace; Clava Cairns (ancient burial spot); Loch Ness boat ride (300hp diesel RIB boat); Loch Ness; Urqhart Castle; Glengarry Castle hotel (where we are today); Invergarry Castle; Ben Nevis (highest mountain here).

It’s all been good except the driving is scary. Right hand drive car, narrow roads, sometimes single lane, traffic circles galore. White knuckle driving for us tourists.

Disappointed. No during our stay. Big drive ahead as we return to the Edinburgh area. Looking forward to seeing the Falkirk wheel today.

Saw the Falkirk wheel in person. Very impressive technology. Also saw the Kelpies. See pics. Back in Edinburgh for a couple of nights then flying home.

Back home now, great trip. 2nd last day we toured the Royal Yacht. That is quite the vessel. I’ll only post a few engine room pics for we gearheads. Two steam turbines. Iirc 12,000 hp each!
