The screws on my "81 Special ll are identical length. The left one also is recessed in the hole.

that's encouraging. Pretty sure these are both original and the same length. Backed them out about half way (one at a time). I can't see and difference, and the cover didn't move.

What you have there is correct.

Thanks Marty. I can't see paying $40 + each to get the posts on them, but I have Chicago Screws. Think I'm going to experiment a bit.

Yes yours is definately correct, its just in the shadow on the first photo. Heres mine in the sunshine, you can see its recessed quite far due to the thickness of the cover.

That's it exactly. And yours is so clean and shiny I want to go park my butt on the concrete and get to polishing. Think I'll get Bill to teach me how to use the buffer with that polish.
