Shift shaft chain guard

Ok, so my 79 XS650SF donor bike, a UK import from Minnesota, had a little over 10k miles on the clock and while pulling the engine apart it was clear it hadn't been apart before. In fact it was clear little on the bike had been disturbed since it rolled out of the factory. Point being, the shift shaft must be a factory fit. Yet it has a waisted shift shaft, like in the pic. Has anyone come across a similar waisted shift shaft on an XS650? Anyway, I'm thinking this obviates the need for a chain gaurd, given the much bigger space available where the chain runs. And, as my chop's engine/frame/rear hub/fender arrangement necessitates a 9.1mm spacer behind the drive sprocket, then maybe there won't be the same need to worry about PMA wiring fouling the chain. Agreed?

Been googling and it seems there are numerous 447 motor shift shafts that also have a waisted section. So I presume the delrin chainguard is really for non-waisted shafts then, as support would be lost over a significantly wide section of the shaft below the sprocket, as in my case.

So you didn’t have a guard to begin with? I just like something that’s not moving with friction on my wiring. Seems like over time that shaft could potentially wear through the shielding. Maybe I’m overthinking it so I’ll shut up now.
Not at all.

When I worked at a bearing manufacturer, one of the tests concerned holding the outer race still in a housing, applying a specific amount of weight to it, and rotating the spherical ball back and forth a few degrees.

The idea was to test how many cycles it took to wear out the Teflon lining.

So you are actually thinking quite perfectly in my opinion.

That could be fixed. One could make 2 delrin half-sleeves and jacket the waisted section before slipping the GLJ design over the whole thing.

Yeah, guess so, but all that's gonna do is produce an end result for the chain to rub on, whereas leaving it out means the chain has nothing to rub on. Guess that's why Yamaha did this change on later models (it seems).

IMG_3612[1].JPG I got 3 yesterday, quicker than Amazon. They look great to me but unfortunately I won't be able to test them out for a while, It looks like all my motors have F'd up cam chain guides and need top end work. Still look like they'll work great and also, I just want to say "Way to go Harrington, congratulations You earned it"
