Btw, that vid reminds me of a deep dive Hubble did about twenty years ago. It was effing fantastic.

That case against generative AI is well worth reading. Edward Zitron shows a very clear perspective on the fundamental difference between output from a LLM AI and a human author.

Here's a quote from the article - Generative AI creates outputs, and by extension defines all labor as some kind of output created from a request. In the case of translation, it’s possible for a company to get by with a shitty version, because many customers see translation as “what do these words say,” even though translation is about conveying meaning. Nevertheless, “translation” work had already started to condense to a world where humans would at times clean up machine-generated text, and the same worker warned that the same might come for other industries. End of quote.

As an undergrad I encountered the work of Noam Chomsky who had an insight into the structure of language. He pointed out that people have long concentrated on grammar as the structure of language. Chomsky's insight was the deep structure of language, which is where meaning is conveyed.

The two sentences, 'The wine was drunk by Fatima' and 'Fatima was drunk by ten o'clock' share the same grammatical structure but at the level of meaning, very different things are happening. A human has no difficulty with this, we intuitively see the correct meaning. But a machine has no intuition. It's worth repeating that, a machine has no intuition, and the AI solution is to look at literally billions of examples of text and find a probabilistic solution.

Interrogate a language-processing machine, 'Who drank the wine?' and the answer is 'Fatima drank the wine' and we are happy with that answer.

But the question 'Who drank Fatima?' is not so easy to deal with. So instead of using simple language rules, the AI developers set their machines to look at their vast databases and pick the likeliest answer. You might get an answer about alcohol abuse? You will not get any insight.

Just in general reading on-line, I think we can already see the gradual erosion of meaning as subtleties of language are lost.

Side note - a UK researcher has been looking at Hansard - the record of all speeches in Parliament. She has noticed lots of clues that politicians are using GPT to write their speeches. There has been an epidemic of MPs opening their mouths and saying 'I rise to speak to the motion . . .'

Rise to speak is just not something that MPs say. Or rather. it's not something they used to say. This year more that 600 speeches started that way. Last year it was 230, the year before none. She says it's clear - GPT is trawling through speeches by US politicians who do use this phrase, and the more often it gets used the more often it gets found and incorporated in speeches here.

Just a quick one on the much-vaunted rise of AI.

Few years ago, on Radio 4, an expert commentator on AI was banging on about how progress in AI was exponential, how it was literally changing the World we live in, faster and faster, at ever increasing pace, to the point that in a couple of years or even sooner literally nothing any of us knows now will be of any relevance to the World we will be living in then.

Apart from the fact that is an extremely unsettling proposition, it's complete bollox. Toast will still land butter side down, cats will still drink spilt milk and yoofs will still be spotty and monosyllabic.

And people will still make absurd and unsubstantiated claims about AI.
 
Total AI crap. Generations are growing up with these nature programs representing true nature stories.

A good example of the waste of resources, (Water) and energy, (electricity), to create false narratives masked as education

Working in an open-plan office, many years ago, our project team was arranged in a set of desks so we could all confer. And of course natter all day. One day, can't recall the conversation but one guy used the word 'gullible'.

So as a joke I sez 'Course, that's not a real word.'

'Wot, gullible isn't a real word' sez a colleague who probably knows full well.

'Well,' I sez,'you won't find it in any dictionary.

And it's maybe one-two minutes till this guy on the far away desk looks up and sez, 'Yes, it definitely is in the dictionary' and reading triumphantly from the little book he keeps in his top-left drawer, he starts to cite the definition of gullible.

Oh, his face as we all pretended to try not to laugh. Leaving him no option but join in and laugh at himself.

We loose one of the greatest human beings this plant has ever had. Someone who has given her life to help us understand ourselves, connection to our planet, and close association to other species


We are debating the value of having a non person with no value of choice, life, life experience, a made up character. People want to follow it on social media and TALENT SCOUTS want to get in on the action.

Where the fuck are we
