Should we be afraid of Artificial Intelligence?

Saw some of Musk's interview with Tucker carlson............(This guy, Musk), is supposed to be some sort of genius, (as he wants us to believe), but man i tell you i could make more sense talking about the universe stoned at 11 years old ,than the things he was saying. And this guy is right into building AI now.

A few weeks ago he signed a cosponsored letter warning of the perils of AI

Now a couple of days ago he i reported to be starting a rival AI launch to ChatGPT

How's your moon, mars rocket company going Skull?

The conclusion was that government-level regulation is needed to control and direct the extent and goals of AI development. But with the warning that it may already be too late.
Don't remember where I read it, but there's an "open source" AI out there now... free for anyone to download and play with.... Goldfinger, Sir Hugo Drax... Steve Bannon....:wink2: ... anyone.
If I had to guess, yeah... too late.

Even Elon Musk thinks it a bad idea. Just think who does the initial programming and establishes the "values".
At least in "I Robot", Asmiov established a prime directive that no harm should be done to humans
Elon with Tucker C proposes parameters for killing the power supply, such as administrator commands being ignored, etc. caution..part of the claptrap might be "political">
Pay no attention to that stuff, but the AI discussion is interesting.

Elon does not mention the deadman method of coercion, as in "if anything happens to me, then..." But TC maybe didn't give him time to think of it. He will, probably has. That's the ploy against the direct method of cutting power. I never before listed to the guy, and almost never watch TV. Interesting fella, a savant, I imagine. part idiot, part genius - such was my impression. He reminds me vaguely of somebody with a touch of perinatal anoxia, just a touch...I knew a fella like that, PhD in mathematics, professional electronics engineer, multimillionaire...and kinda jerk. Most successful strategy is indirect. AI looks like a rich field for strategies. On both sides!

Best!

My father used to say

that person has an easy life, he has no common sense that burdens / disturbs him
Well, Jan-P, your dad was right.

An uncle used to remark that the men in charge have never been hungry nor have they ever had to do a full day's work in an honest job or trade. Without that knowledge they can't have common sense.

“the World Economic Forum, which on Sunday published a report based on surveys of more than 800 companies.
……found that employers expect to create 69 million new jobs by 2027 and eliminate 83 million positions. That will result in a net loss of 14 million jobs, equivalent to 2% of current employment.
The rush to deploy artificial intelligence, meanwhile, will serve as both a positive and a negative force.

Companies will need new workers to help them implement and manage AI tools. Employment of data analysts and scientists, machine learning specialists and cybersecurity experts is forecast to grow 30% on average by 2027, according to WEF.

At the same time, the proliferation of artificial intelligence will put many roles at risk, as robots replace humans in some cases. There could be 26 million fewer record-keeping and administrative jobs by 2027, WEF predicted. Data entry clerks and executive secretaries are expected to see the steepest losses.”

Have you seen the numbers on how much POWER the server farms needed to run AI will start using?

On the other hand that's trivial compared to the energy that goes into manufacturing and refining raw material of all sorts.

From the article you linked to above…

“the largest data centers require more than 100 megawatts of power capacity, which is enough to power some 80,000 U.S. households”

Holy Crap! I had no idea! So are the data centers and electric vehicles going to be competing for available electricity? Meanwhile in some parts of the country the power grid is hanging by a thread. 😳

Forget AI.... throw mining bitcoin into the mix. Talk about energy intensive.... :yikes:

And when it comes to Artificial Intelligence it can be better than no intelligence .. And as Mr 40north has it #52
