Background: '78E missing one of the top rubber pieces that the metal side covers hang on. Stupidly pulled all 3 remaining rubbers off for a good ArmorAll & VRT "renewal" treatment (ha-ha), but didn't notice they were not all identical.

Parts catalog confirms that the front and rear rubbers are different p/n's, and one version has an additional lip or "hook" on it, while the other version is smooth and doesn't have the lip.

Can anyone tell me which is which i.e. does the lipped version install in the front or the rear?

Or am I trying to research something that is non-existent e.g. at some time in the past a po replaced one or more of these with an incorrect part?

Thanks!

Yes, that "hooked" rubber cover makes side cover removal difficult so I use 4 of the "no hook" version. And originals are best. The re-pops only last a couple years before splitting. Here's what to look for (on eBay) ......

And according to the parts diagram, this one goes on the front, the "hooked" one goes on the rear.

I tried to put the hooked one to the rear. But it didn't appear to fit.
But they are repro. So that may have something to do with it.

Can't help wondering why Yamaha used the hooked v. smooth? I mean, the hook might help retain the cover if it was flopping around, but with the cover installed correctly over the tangs and the knob fixed and in-place, I can't see the cover going anywhere, hook or no hook.
